Ex-Councilor, Others Arrested For Kidnapping Kogi Governor’s Mother



A former Councilor in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Iliyasu Suleiman and 4 members of his Kidnap/ armed robbery gang have been arrested and paraded by the Nigeria Police Force.
The gang is said to be  responsible for the 2015 kidnap of the mother of the now Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.
Addressing newsmen while parading the suspects at the force headquarters, Tuesday in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood said all the suspects confessed to the crime and other robberies and kidnapping in FCT, Kogi and Niger States.
He said “sequel to the Inspector General of Police Directive on the kidnapping in Abuja, Niger and Kogi States, the Operatives of the IGP Intelligence Response Team swung into action after the earlier arrest of Danladi Ibrahim aka Apayi, in follow up confession on several robberies and kidnapping in Kogi, Abuja and Niger States including the kidnapping of Governor Yahaya Bello’s mother in Okene, Kogi State in 2015, the Response Teams were deployed to the State and eventually three members of the deadly kidnapping/Terrorist Gang were arrested in Okene”.
He listed those arrested to include; the gang leader, Hon. Iliyasu Suleiman, 44years a former councillor in Okene Local Government Area, Danjuma Ibrahim aka Apayi, 26 years old, Iliyasu Obadaki aka Doctor, 35, Alhaji Nasiru, 43, who keeps custody of gang’s arms and ammunition, Hafiz Yakubu, 26 and Mohammed Jamiu who was killed in gun duel with SARS.
The Force PRO said efforts are being intensified to arrest other fleeing members of the gang while those in police custody will be charged to court on completion of investigation.
Meanwhile, following the continuous menace of armed robbery and kidnapping along the Abuja-Kaduna highway, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has deployed a Joint Police Team to root out the kidnap for ransom and armed robbery gangs that have being terrorising the area in recent times.
The Team comprises Special Police Force, Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Squad, Anti Kidnapping Units, Intelligence Response Team, Special Tactical Squad, the Force Intelligence Branch.
Moshood Jimoh, the Force Public Relations Officer told newsmen in Abuja that the operation which is supervised by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Department of Operations, is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring absolute sanity in the Abuja-Kaduna highway. Jimoh also pointed out  that the Team will complement the ongoing joint Police/Military Operations on ground in the area.
He said “the Police Personnel will be proactive and work on actionable intelligence at the disposal of the Force and carry out massive deployment and 24 hours surveillance and patrol, continuous raids of identified and other suspected hideouts of the kidnappers with a view to arresting them promptly before innocent people are attacked.
“Police helicopters will embark on aerial surveillance and guided missions to assist the Operation Absolute Sanity’s personnel on ground in covering difficult terrain”, he said.
He urged road users and those living in the towns and villages along the highway not to panic on the mass deployment of Police personnel but rather assist  the personnel in the discharge of their duties.
