JAMB Orders All Institutions To End 2017 Admissions January 25

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Thursday directed all tertiary institutions to end their 2017 admission by January 25.

The Board’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjaminsaid the board’s decision came at a meeting where all issues and ones bordering on the admission process were taken into consideration.

He said it was resolved that the academic calendar must be adhered to. According to him, the directive becomes necessary as the board intends to meet up with the academic calendar as earlier agreed.

“By implication, candidates who have gained admissions into various institutions and are yet to register or do not have admissions by January 25 should begin to make preparations for the 2018 UTME.

“The public must also note that the UTME results are valid for only one year and not three years as widely speculated.

“If changes are made to the validity, I assure you the board would communicate appropriately to the public.” The board had recently said that the UTME examinations would take place between March 9 and 17, while the mock exams would take place in the first week of February.

Benjamin also noted that the sale of Direct Entry forms is ongoing while urging candidates who intend to apply to do so immediately as the sale of the DE forms ends on the same date with the UTME’s.

“It has come to our knowledge that a lot of candidates are not aware of the sale of the Direct Entry forms, which we have advertised.

“We are calling on desirous candidates to please register their profile and obtain the pins from the vending platforms.

“Candidates who want to apply to institutions through DE must note that the sale of the forms started the same date as the UTME’s and would end on the same date which is on February 6.

“This form can be obtained through the same process as the UTME forms. “It could be purchased through vending commercial banks, Mobile Money Operators (MMO’s), Interswitch, NIPOST, and Remita,” he said.

Benjamin, however, noted that candidates should ensure that they disclose at the point of obtaining e-pins the exact pins they are paying for, that is, Direct Entry or UTME as some unknowingly purchase Direct Entry instead of UTME and vice-versa.

HOW WE SPENT 6 YEARS IN KSU FOR A 4 YEAR COURSE - CRY OF A KSU GRADUATE

*our mistake as students
*How you can avoid it
Ordinarily, it shouldn't bother me to know how KSU is faring because of how it intends to frustrate me and many others of my set. But if I allow you to fall into the fate I experienced, it will, in all sense, be bad of me. You must not make the mistakes we made.
I come here once in a blue moon to set records straight. To clarity and to keep you informed on cogent steps. Because he that is informed can't be deformed. You see, for every bad experience we had while in school, we share our own part of the blame as students. Lack of interest in the student union and wrong decision in electing quality student leaders topped our mistakes. We had weak Aluta and that was why we were made scape goats for lapses on the side of the management and the then ASUU.
Maladministration on the side of the management and government will always be a threat to seamless academic activities but with vocal and dogged student union, such threat can be rebuffed and silenced or better still, the effects can be minimized.
Of a truth I tell you, school can be frustrating if you have wrong people or mediocre as student leaders.
You need someone who can strangle the government to pay you bursary if need be. You need someone who will always give you a listening ear. You need someone who knows the legal implication of management policies. You need a rugged man. We had no such person in my time and that is why we spent more years in school than we bargained for.
On that basis, I recommend Comrade AK Musa for your SUG president.
Sincerely, I have no personal relationship with this young man. But from our several encounters in the course of tackling the management, I discovered that he is a rare gem. He is a guy who would tackle your affairs from legal perspectives and make astute moves to put them to rest.
With this guy, you won't experience anything like Lecturers moving away with your scripts and then the sug president is confused. That was the case in our own time.
He is read and well exposed. Vote Ak Musa and thank me later.
AK is Ok

How To Know Who To Vote, Kogi State University As A Case Study - By Cosmos Ogiri

Kogi State University is a tertiary institution of learning in Kogi State. I was admitted to Kogi State University in the year 2011. From 2011 till date we have had Students Union Leaders everyone despite disruptions. These set of leaders left different lessons to study and come up with a broad but a guiding fact to knowing who to vote for in an election.
Before you would say I have no rights to speak on who to vote in an election. I passed through same fact and I was the Public Relations Officer in one of those sets of leaders that left one or two lessons to serve as a case study in students unionism.
1. Background of Responsiblities handled in the past. Let's do a research on whom to vote. What is the background of responsibilities handled and what is the performance rate. Was he a class representative? What is majority of those represented saying?
2. Responsible lifestyle is a factor of knowing who best to vote. Just like it is said that "you are addressed the very way you dress" same why it is true that someone's mentality and behavior affects his sense of lifestyle. Ask around and don't fall for physical outfit.
3. Responsiveness to other people's issues. Yes! This is very important. How many selfless programs have this candidate attended or organised. Is he in any none governmental organization to provide platforms for selfless humanitarian response? This is very paramount. A leader who is not responsive to selfless service is only going there for selfish services when elected.
Above is not all but just a three point to guide you. Further more I want us to elaborate while narrowing to Kogi State University.
4. Popularity: this is very deceitful and so many persons have used this as a yieldstick to knowing who to vote in an election. People became popular for bad reasons as well as good reasons. Which one is this person we are going to vote.
5. Profession: Employing a doctor for been intelligent as a lawyer is the fastest way to kill public sanity. Everyone can become a politician but let's the fact be said that profession is all about the mentality. That's why a Doctor can perform well as Governor of a state and a political scientific may not have the professional mendate to perform better than a management graduate who is also good in public affairs and management.
6. Level of Desperate, those desperate to become leaders as proved in the past that a lot promises was made but none was accomplished. So be mindful of those that are ready to do everything to elected.
7. Level of commitment. What is the level of commitment to the plight of the immediate community and what was the contribution of such a person?
8. Mission, an aspirant that has no clear mission in either a single word or in a single sentence is a wrong note.
9. Calibre of supporters and interest. This is nail. Hit this hard. We all know what God fathers are? What are their interest? For the students or for their self?
What has these Godfathers done for students welfarism? If na juju this one must stop abeg.
10. Powers from above, be very smart in checking to know who the management and government is supporting so you won't vote in school fee increment. Sponsored candidate always come with an agenda.
Only a final note I don't know it all. Let's learn from the past and make our today the best we can make out of it.
2018 SUG Presidential Candidates in no particular order

Government Sponsored Candidate For Students' Union Government Upcoming Elections in Kogi State University

kogi state University Sug Elections is fast approaching, and many people have been speculating the outcome already, candidates have been ready and waiting patiently for the D-Day

meanwhile, a post on facebook drew our attention, the excerpts are below.......
No automatic alt text available.
Its saddening to see that some of those students leaders i hold at high esteem supports this shameful conduct of the Kogi State government, alleged of imposing sponsored candidates on the students in the upcoming SUG elections.
I weep for the students because the power of the Students Union government Has been hijacked. Students leaders are no longer elected but selected in Kogi state University. Its shameful, and unaccepted. This is Anarchy.
The right of the students to elect their leaders have been defeated.
I advised anyone who's name is on the sponsored list to post a Disclaimer of having involved himself in this shameful conduct and await the right process of elections to take its cause. We wouldn't want to vote a student leader who will not challenge the government when the rights of the students are been trampled upon.
Let's all stand against sponsored candidature of the students union because from the words of Martin Luther -The King "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"

#IDontLikeWhatIHate, Resigned Ksu SUG PRO Cosmos Ogiri Breaks Silence - Ask For Reasons For The Delay In SUG/Nakoss Elections

Kogi State University Former SUG PRO who is known to be controversial and has in the time past raise up to topics in the SUG unions that created a buzz and saga around campus which everyone talked about for long. This time around he Is looking for answers to what is delaying a new sug/Nakoss election as the semester is getting to an end already.

Read below what he wrote....

"I really want to start analyzing the actions of the Nigerian Federal Governments and the opportunity cost of its actions and inactions with the hash tag #iDontLikeWhatiHate but then as a young man with conscience and a Christian I ask my self if I have the moral justifications to air my voice on the activities of another man's leadership style? Not forgetting so soon how the little opportunity given to me in the Students Union Government was handled. It was one of fights, counter actions and what have you - public show of shame. But that was necessary in the past, two wrongs can't make a right! One of the parties must had a genuine cause of action while the other party must be totally wrong. Two right tools can't be on a logger head and achieve nothing. One must be wrong, the other must be right.

Time is already telling on us, we beginning to know those who where real enemies of the struggle. Need I remind myself that uptill this moment as I pen down my worries that no election have been held in Kogi State University to bring new EXCOS into mother unions of the institution?

What could be the problem? In NAKOSS, aspirants have paid and bought forms for offices and first semester is almost ending. Where is their money? In whose pocket is it? Why hasn't they been election into the SUG and NAKOSS? Who is holding unto the power and for what reason is the person doing so? Why is the populace not reacting?

All these questions have cleared my conscience and I will boldly let time tell us more we need to know. I will let time heal, time speaks volumes and with time I shall regain my moral justifications to unleash my provocation on the present day Nigeria Government via #iDontLikeWhatiHate analysis of the actions of the Nigerian Federal Government and the opportunity cost of its actions and inactions.
Together, we can."

Hand Over The Mantle - Kogi State Student Cries Out For A New SUG/Nakoss Election

HANDOVER THE MANTLE........... SUG/NAKOSS......

Government is widely believed to be an instrument through which a society is organised in order to maintain law and order as well as advance the necessary social amenities in a community....
Popularly referred to as SUG, Students Union Governments were established in various institutions of higher learning to promote unity, orderliness and smooth relationship between students, school authorities and the state or Federal Government.

It is no news that there ought to have been an election long before now in kogi state state university as the tenur is normally @n academic session ie to mean the tenur of the outgang excos has elapsed...but due to the protracted strike action, the election was not conducted as at when due....

Kudos to the outgoing SUG Executives for their tireless effect, yet as students of Kogi State University , we are being deprived of so many things because it seems we've lost our voice, or perhaps our voice have gone faint, although to some extent the council of departmental presidents has been playing the role of a union, but that is not enough....

The semester is far spent yet it doesn't seem like any thing is ongoing about the election, all the proposed date / rumors were all fruitless; imagine if the election or tenur of a Government in Nigeria was left with power for even 48hrs after due date, what do we think will happen?

Quoting the words of a Comrade....
"Need I remind myself that uptill this moment as I pen down my worries that no election
have been held in Kogi State University to bring new EXCOS into mother unions of the
institution?

What could be the problem? In NAKOSS, aspirants have paid and bought forms for
offices and first semester is almost ending. Where is their money? In whose pocket is
it? Why hasn't there been election into the SUG and NAKOSS? Who is holding unto the
power and for what reason is the person doing so? Why is the populace not reacting?

All these questions have cleared my conscience and I will boldly let time tell us more
we need to know"

And Quoting the words of another Comrade........
"By extension I am not suppose to talking about KSU Unionisms again but unfortunately it happened like this, as I'm talking to you myself has started having issue with some powers that be in KSU due to my usual way of said what I think is right for me and the entire students, we are every ready to conduct election and handover whatever in our possession but university management keep telling us stories and you know that we have a limited power as regarded KSU because students handbook's which has been their medium of threat to every one of us."

ITS not that the populace dont know about all the "truths and lies" flying all around and the least of the populace will know that there has been reason(s) why the power hasnt been handed over...People are watching far and wide and even for future purposes. Whatever the reason, we dont wanna know again.

All we demand is that elections should hold for posts in the unions (SUG & NAKOSS) this semester ASAP, for the interest of all students.... Appeal Goes to all bodies responsible for the conduction of this said election....Enough is Enough, We Need New Executives.
A new Government we Demand...
#SUG
#NAKOSS
And I kept thinking through the night......

ASUU Strike: No End In Sight

The representatives of the Federal Government and the leadership of ASUU have failed to reach a consensus on the current industrial strike action.

Hope that the strike action embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is about to come to an end appears dashed as congresses of universities met across the country to deliberate on the recent agreements reached between the leadership of the union and the Federal Government.

Feelers from the congresses that have met indicate that the unions were not ready to call of the strike because the government is yet to show the necessary commitment to their plights.

For instance, in congresses held yesterday at the University of Ibadan, UI, and Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, EKSU, members of the union decided to continue with the strike action on the ground that the Federal Government’s offers are not acceptable to them.

According to reliable sources, the staff are not comfortable with the fact that only about one of the seven demands, which is the issue of staff schools of the universities was convincingly addressed by the government. Government only made promises as regards the other demands which do not show any difference from what was on ground before the strike.

As at the time of filing this report, UI was devoid of activities as all unions on campus both academic and non academic have embarked on indefinite strike.

A lecturer from EKSU said, “We have agreed that the strike must continue until the Federal Government is ready to grant our demands in practical way not in promissory act”.

In one of the interaction with the media after the last meeting the union had with the government, ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi said that he could not determine when the union would call off its strike adding that calling off the strike would be determined by the entire members of the union.
However, the effects of the strike has began to manifest as some students who have secured employments have decided to abandon their academic programmes.

A Master’s Degree student of UI who did not want his name mentioned said, “I have been looking for a job for a while now. Because I don’t want to be sitting at home, I obtained a postgraduate form and I was admitted. We were about to start our exam when the strike action began. Now I have a job. I can’t trade the job with the Master’s prpogramme. If I decide to leave the job and go back to school when the strike action is over, what gives me the impression that I will get a job as soon as I am through with the Master’s programme? I will do the Master’s programme when it is more convenient”.

Another student said, “I am considering private university, maybe BABCOCK or Lead City University. Government universities in Nigeria are becoming a problem and time waster. Unfortunately, we don’t have responsible government who will be ready to do what the unions are asking for. First, people in government will chose to embezzle people’s money or mismanage it rather than using it for public good. Since Nigeria has been in recession, have you heard political office holders reducing their salaries and allowances? Go to the National Assembly, and see the exotic cars they are buying. Their salaries are been paid as at when due.

"Under the nose of President Muhammadu Buhari, those in the executive are also stealing. How many thieves will Buhari catch? Except the system is working, nothing good can come from Nigeria”.

To some female students, the strike action is a blessing to them as some pregnant female students delivered babies.

One of them said, “I thank God because I don’t know how I would have coped. I gave birth within two weeks the strike action commenced. That means that I would have given birth to my child while my first semester examination is on-going. This means that I might have not been able to write all my papers. So you can see now that it is a blessing for me. If the strike action is called off now, at least I can sit for my exam and graduate when my mates are graduating”.

Kogi State University; Graduating Students Contribute Money to Pay Lecturers

The dismissed Kogi State University (KSU) teachers have withheld graduating students’ results and vowed not to release them, except the school withdraws their “sack letters” and pays their arrears. To pacify the aggrieved teachers, some of the students are secretly contributing N3,000 each to facilitate the release of their results. MOHAMMED YABAGI reports.
The fate of the graduating students of the Kogi State University (KSU) in Anyigba is hanging in the balance – no thanks to a battle between the management and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The school has just resumed another session, but the graduating students’ results from all faculties have not been computed.
This development is in response to the proscription of ASUU by the government, and last month’s mass dismissal of members of the academic staff by the school authorities.
At the time of filing this report, graduating students are not sure of their fate, weeks after the school rounded off the 2016/2017 calendar. The sacked lecturers have vowed not to release their results until their demands were met by the school. The lecturers want their salary arrears paid and they also want the school to reverse their dismissal.
The lecturers were sacked over their refusal to resume work after a six-month internal strike. No fewer than 150 members of the academic staff were affected in the mass dismissal, which followed the government’s proscription of ASUU in the school.
Some of the graduating students, who spoke to CAMPUSLIFE, are worried about their fate, because they have not had access to the results of their final examinations. The students complained that some of them may end up having two extra sessions in the school if they failed compulsory courses in the withheld results.
CAMPSULIFE gathered that some of them who had carryover courses in the first semester of the 2016/2017 session could not register in the current session because they did not know if they passed all the compulsory courses in the second semester.
Gideon Amedu, a graduating student of the Department of Philosophy, said his department had not released 300-Level and final year results, expressing fear that many of his colleagues may likely come back after the session to register for 300-Level courses. He said there was no hope any student from his department would be mobilised for the National Youth Service this year, because the department had not released any result in the last two years.
He said: “It is sad that my department has not released any results since 2015. Like me, many students in my set are experiencing the same fate. We have not seen our results for both 300- and 400-Levels. Some of us in my department and others from other departments are eager to know our fate as to whether we can still go for National Youth Service this year or not.
“If the results had been released, most of us would know whether there is a need to remedy any compulsory course. But for now, we don’t know if we are in good standing or not. As I speak to you, none of the graduating students really knows what to do. This is why we are pleading with our lecturers to consider our plight and release the results to the school.”

Another graduating student, Moses Eleojo, decried the situation, noting that KSU “is one institution that seems to thrive on crisis and unconventional method of doing things”.
He wondered why students could not access their results a year after they sat for examination, saying the credibility of the results could be affected by the prolonged withholding. He blamed the situation on what he called “the lackadaisical attitude” of the management.
He said: “In other institutions, lecturers are expected to submit students’ results no later than three weeks after the conclusion of examination. But in KSU, lecturers can sit on results for as long as they want and this situation is putting students under unnecessary pressure, and giving lecturers opportunities to manipulate results.”
Findings by CAMPUSLIFE revealed that some lecturers, who resigned from the institution in the wake of the recent ASUU-government faceoff, also went away with students’ results and marking sheets to be used to grade final year students’ research projects.
Some graduating students, who are not ready to take chances, have chosen to take their destinies in their hands, CAMPUSLIFE reliably gathered. It was learnt that some frustrated students had started to contribute money to pay the sacked lecturers’ salaries to facilitate the release of the withheld results.
A source told CAMPUSLIFE that graduating students from a department in the Faculty of Social Sciences have started to contribute N3,000 each to pay off the salaries being owed a lecturer, who now teaches in another university.
Reacting, one of the disengaged lecturers at the Department of Mass Communication, who did not want his name in print, vowed not to release students’ results in his possession if his arrears were not paid by the school. Before the matter blew open, he said the management made several entreaties to the affected lecturers, noting that many of them rejected the school’s plea because of the way they were treated by the school and the government.
The Mass Communication lecturer said the decision to hold on to the results was taken because the affected academic staff did not get assurance on whether salaries owed would be paid.
He said: “The only thing that can make me release results in my possession is for the school to pay my arrears and withdraw the illegal sack letter issued. This is the only condition to settle the matter. There were promises made by the management in the past, they ended in disappointments. I will release the students’ results only if I am paid and recalled.”
Another affected lecturer, Mr. Ben Ibe Onoja, said the graduating students’ results were not unjustly being withheld. “The fact is that, we are still on strike,” Onoja said.
He said it would be unprofessional for any lecturer to refuse to submit students’ results at the end of the session. He added that the school management should know how to recover any result being unjustly withheld by any lecturer.
He said: “Do you expect people who are on strike to carry out any official engagement? Marking of scripts and submission of results to management is an official function, which anyone on industrial action should not engage in.”
A source in the Public Relations Department, who pleaded not to be named, said the management was working round the clock to ensure the matter was resolved on time, so that the students could be mobilised for National Youth Service.

ASUU Strike: Accept FG's Offer - Students Beg Lecturers

Voicing the mood of Nigerian students, the leadership of NANS has begged strike university workers to accept FG's offer and call of the ongoing strike.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities to accept the offers made by the Federal Government and to call off the ongoing strike.

The Federal Government’s team dialoguing with ASUU had agreed to set-up a seven-man joint committee to look into all ASUU demands as well as agreed to release billions of naira to meet universities infrastructural needs.

The current agreement was reached after about 12 hours and 30 minutes of a closed door meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

“NANS is passionately appealing to ASUU to consider the offer made by the Federal Government in the interest of Nigerian students,” the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Comrade Bestman Okereafor, said in a statement on Saturday.

“Even as NANS delegation shall be meeting with Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, the National President of ASUU and his executives next week on the resumption of classes in the universities.”

Okereafor noted that NANS conclusively wish “to reassure our compatriots that NANS under the watch of Comrade Aruna Kadiri is poised and committed to giving a more proactive and responsive representation to students.

“We are optimistic that the storm in the universities will be over soonest.”

The national leadership of ASUU, however, said though it accepted the proposals presented by the government but would take the proposals to its members in various states and universities chapters.

The union would likely get back to the Federal Government within a week time.

Students Association pleads with ASUU to resolve dispute with FG

Students Association pleads with ASUU to resolve dispute with FG - BellaNaija
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has pleaded with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to seek alternative avenues to resolve its dispute with the Federal Government.
News that ASUU intends to begin an indefinite strike has been circulating in the media.
Bestman Okereafor, the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, made the appeal in a statement issued in Enugu on Monday.
Okereafor said that the looming strike, if embarked on, would “definitely portend ill for the education sector’’ and the country in general.
He said that NANS agreed that issues being agitated for by ASUU were long-standing but declared that previous strikes had never really brought the desired results.
“We are trying to meet with education stakeholders as well as ASUU to put the agitating issues on the table to see which ones we can plead with ASUU to suspend for now and the ones we can engage the Federal Government on.
“As much as we are not in support of the strike, we are not telling ASUU out-rightly that it is wrong for them to go on strike. You don’t flog a man and tell him not to cry.
“We are also pleading with the Federal Government to be responsible enough to meet the demands that they have reached over time since 2009.
“Agreed, it is not this present government that reached that agreement, but the government is a continuum; so it is expected that government should have sat down with ASUU to review the agreement and agree on certain things.
“Not for us to start hearing that they want to go on strike again. It’s unfortunate.
