Government Sponsored Candidate For Students' Union Government Upcoming Elections in Kogi State University

kogi state University Sug Elections is fast approaching, and many people have been speculating the outcome already, candidates have been ready and waiting patiently for the D-Day

meanwhile, a post on facebook drew our attention, the excerpts are below.......
No automatic alt text available.
Its saddening to see that some of those students leaders i hold at high esteem supports this shameful conduct of the Kogi State government, alleged of imposing sponsored candidates on the students in the upcoming SUG elections.
I weep for the students because the power of the Students Union government Has been hijacked. Students leaders are no longer elected but selected in Kogi state University. Its shameful, and unaccepted. This is Anarchy.
The right of the students to elect their leaders have been defeated.
I advised anyone who's name is on the sponsored list to post a Disclaimer of having involved himself in this shameful conduct and await the right process of elections to take its cause. We wouldn't want to vote a student leader who will not challenge the government when the rights of the students are been trampled upon.
Let's all stand against sponsored candidature of the students union because from the words of Martin Luther -The King "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"

Alleged Bribery Tape: Dino Melaye Might Be Removed From Office Following New Development

Pressure has continued to mount of Senator Melaye to come clean on the alleged bribery of a judge for political gains.

Dino Melaye

A former representative of Kogi-West senatorial district, Senator Smart Adeyemi, has demanded for thorough investigations into the leaked tape of a conversation held between his successor, Senator Dino Melaye and Justice Akoh Ikpeme.

Adeyemi, who was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2015 general election, made the call while speaking to newsmen in Abuja, on Sunday.

The conversation, which some said suggested the existence of a liaison bothering on corruption, has been trending online after it was first posted by an online medium, Sahara Reporters.

The former lawmaker explained that the conduct of Justice Ikpeme and her team during the sitting of the Elections Tribunal in Lokoja left so much to be desired.

Adeyemi said, “I hereby call for a thorough investigation by the appropriate authorities, that is, the Chief Justice of the Federation, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General for the Federation, the National Judicial Council, the EFCC, the ICPC and the DSS.

“I wish to emphasize without any fear of contradiction that in the Nigerian judiciary, there are people of high integrity; who are God-fearing. Our judiciary is still one of the best in Africa and, indeed, our professionals compete favourably with the best of legal practitioners around the globe.

“Now, to the kernel of this discourse; after the judgment of Justice Akon Ikpeme at the National Assembly Tribunal sitting in Lokoja, the people of our senatorial district were shocked and perplexed as to the outcome of the ruling of the judge.”

He noted that his election petition before Justice Akon Ikpeme was hurriedly struck out for no justifiable reason. And that when his legal team proceeded to the Appeal Court to seek redress, the appellate court ruled that the matter should be heard, this he said led his team back to the tribunal.

Adeyemi said he and the members of his legal team sensed a foul play in the way his petition was struck out so they petitioned the President of the Court of Appeal asking that the case be assigned to another judge, adding that the president granted the request and re-assigned the case to Justice Diran Akintola.

Several attempts to get an official reaction from Melaye were unsuccessful as he neither picked nor returned calls made to his mobile telephone. He did not respond to a text message sent to him on the subject.

In other news, the Judge involved in Dino Melaye tape scandal, Justice Akon Ikpeme has "confessed" to speaking to Senator Melaye, seeks soft-landing.

Kogi Govt Forcefully Engaged School Children To Clean Lokoja Township Roads On Children’s Day

…Lacks the real essense of Children’s Day celebrations.
It is common knowledge that children are the future of every country. They are the future of a great nation only if given a solid foundation on which a better society can be built. The direction of a nation therefore can be gauged by the importance that nation places on its children and youths.

The Children’s Day in Nigeria was created in 1964 as inspired by the United Nations children’s efforts. It is marked on the 27th day of May each year and recognised as a school holiday for them. The standard practice is to select children from each school to participate in a match-past to salute the state leader in the stadium in competition with other schools. The schools are selected for first, second and third prices respectively, won at the march past. This renders the celebration education based, thus depriving others that are unable to enrol in schools due to poverty.

In the case of Kogi State, the government through the honorable Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, The Kogi state SUBEB Chairman, Mrs Deborah Osatimehin and the state commissioner for Education, Dr Sunday Tolorunleke on Saturday took the students to the streets of Lokoja to sanitized the street said its the real essence of the celebration. This new development in Kogi State is so bad and the children are been exposed to danger on their special day. They were forcefully engaged to uproot grasses with their bare hands on their day of celebration. This is unfair. This is against the child’s right law. The children of Kogi State deserve apology from the state government.

Despite all the publications made by office of the Commissioner for women affairs and social development, Honorable Bolanle Amupitan, one would be expecting an elaborate celebrations for kogi children on that day instead of taking them to the street for sanitation of lokoja roads.

The government should apologize to the Kogi State children for violating their right on their special day.

Kogi Targets 50,000 Jobs Through Omi Dam

Kogi State Governor, Alh Yahaya Bello has assured the people of the state that Kogi will focus on agriculture to win against recession.

The Governor disclosed this on Sunday while speaking through his Director General on Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo, saying the massive agricultural activities at Omi Dam is one of the signature projects of his administration to negotiate the recession bend through upscaling of agricultural production.

The Governor said his administration has identified agriculture as the Savior of the Nigerian economy through food production, youth engagement and the value chain of a year-round farming which the project offers.

“We are targeting massive wealth creation at the Omi Dam Irrigation Project. A number of investors are already there and we hope to push higher in the coming months and open a vista of opportunities for the people. Our target is to generate over 50,000 jobs at Omi and engage our youth in commercial agriculture as a way of disengaging them from crimes. It is already paying off as we are also exploring such opportunities in other Senatorial Districts across the state”.

Bello said his administration is working with a number of agricultural programs and policies that will serve as impetus for higher agricultural production, expressing satisfaction with the seamless mechanism for fertilizer supply to improve yield.

“The New Direction administration is committed to food security through commercial agriculture and we want investors to keep trooping into the state to tap into our great agricultural potentials. Kogi is ready to feed Nigeria”.

The Governor called on the youth to form agricultural cooperatives and be prepared to be job creators rather than job seekers, assuring them of continued support by his administration.

Exploits Of Excellent Leadership: Governor Yahaya Bello In The Eye Of History

Excellence is indeed an art, greatness is a habit, for we are what we repeatedly do. It is no longer news that Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has been consistently identified as one of the best performing Governors in sub-Saharan Africa by pundits and political observers. With recorded giant strides made with his New Direction Team in the core areas of infrastructural revampment, security, agricultural revolution, Civil service and pension reforms, youth empowerment and probity in governance, it is indeed a thoroughly merited observation.

Little wonder the Governor received goodwill messages from many quarters as Daily Times Nigeria honoured him deservingly as one of the Times Heroes in commemoration of the 91st anniversary of the oldest Newspaper in Nigeria. For a recognized, age-long truth-dispensing institution like Daily Times Nigeria to find one worthy of honour, celebration and recognition for charting a new course and plausible direction for development, stability, peace and progress in the glare of stiff opposition to change and development is no mean feat. Such reputable recognitions are therefore needed to celebrate performing public office holders to encourage them to do more.

It is worthy of note that the Inspector General of Police gave a similar Award of Recognition for outstanding Leadership and Efforts at Adressing Security Challenges in the State for the year 2016 to the Governor.

This lofty stride achieved in the area of security has been lauded by a number of well-meaning  people, Kogites and non-Kogites alike. One of such people is a respected military personnel who fought in the warfront for four years, Cheer Agba who made an incisive comment on security in Kogi State then and now. He remarked:

“It (insecurity in Kogi State) got so bad my battalion drafted a fighting unit to marry up with other regiments in the fight to rescue Kogi. I lost two of my colleagues there in 2012. In fact, Boko Haram boast and threat that they would demolish Nigeria in 24 hours was as a result of the grip they had on Kogi as their tactical command headquarters. That Kogi enjoys this level of peace and tranquility this soon is a miracle to me.”

This is a great testimony from a dispassionate and objective Nigerian Soldier. It bears eloquent testimony to the Governor’s capacity to deliver on his electioneering promises.

It would be recalled that the Governor has made good his promise to sanitize the Kogi State civil service and pension’s scheme, thus fishing out ghost workers and saving the State of monumental waste hitherto expended on paying non-existent people on the State’s wage bill. Not only has he successfully cleared the stables, he has commenced the payment of the cleared workers.

Torrents of deserving applause for this trustworthy Statesman attended the Kogi airwaves as members of the Kogi State Council for Arts and Culture began to sing his praise as they received their salary alerts. Many people also offered him hearty prayers for pardoning the less grievous offences committed by some civil servants including the staff of Kogi State Arts Council, who received alerts for their accumulated salaries and emoluments. These include the staff who were on the uncleared list for “less serious” infractions and pardoned on April 30th, 2017 with a directive that their entitlements be computed and paid before May 31. No wonder, the moniker for the performance-delivery Governor in the State is “Mr. Talk and Do”.

That is not all, as part of the Agricultural revolution initiative of the Governor, the State under the distinguished leadership of the Executive Governor would on May 29, 2017 be kickstarting massive agricultural projects in Kogi State. Rice mill would be situated in Kampe-Omi Dam and it would create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs for citizens of the State and the scheme plans to have the production of Confluence Rice to be made abundantly available in the State by December projection.

It is worthy of commendation that investors are now trooping into the State because the State is now safe, secure and business-friendly due to the efforts of the quiet achieving Governor who is eternally committed to turning around the fortunes of the State and leaving in its trail, monumental verifiable achievements.

It is instructive to note that the safety of the state is not unconnected to Governor Yahaya Bello’s passion for the security of lives and properties of all indigenes and inhabitants of Kogi State.

It is amazing that the Governor is not doing exploits because of his desire to continue in office, but because of posterity. At the Daily Times Nigeria Banquet where he was honoured he enthused: “My fellow awardees, congratulations. As we continue in the business of governance, let us govern with posterity and not the next election in mind”.

This is indeed the word and mindset of a Statesman who is primarily concerned about the next generation, not a typical Politician simply worried about the next election.

It’s indeed the dawn of new direction, the core of good governance, the crescendo of excellent servant leadership, the gizmo of dependable industry and the shore of socio-political and economic prosperity for the people of Kogi. History will one day adjudge as fair and rewarding the giant strides of this great leader who prioritises the people over and above himself.

God bless the people of Kogi State; God bless the performing Governor as he continues to deliver the dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of the people.

– Petra Akinti Onyegbule is the Chief Press Secretary to the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.

Must Read: Kogi, A State Governed Like A Coin Toss

For personal reasons, I resolved to slow the pace of my objections and criticism of the the Alhaji Yahaya Bello led government of Kogi State. However, whenever the breath of a seeming new leaf is in the air, the old ways surface and I can’t stop wondering why and when the government will get it right.

For the avoidance of doubt, the worst impression that any sane government and people must never let to interwoven them is mistrust but this has become the trade mark of the new direction government. I read with hopes and optimism a Facebook post by the chief press secretary to the alias white lion governor of Kogi State when she confidently expressed that all salaries and arrears shall be cleared latest March 31, 2017.

While pessimists and some notable opposition figures maintained with some even vowing that Kogi State was broke, u chose the part of fair judgment by giving the government a benefit of doubt considering the source and optimism expressed in the post said above. Alas, less than a week to the said deadline, reversed turned the case as those who never believed in the tendency of sincerity from the digital government got vindicated.

This development did not just shock me but kept me wondering whether Kogi State has been turned into a state(government) of coin toss. Recall elementary sports where toss is often used to determine the fate of who shall posses ball at the kick off. Despite the abysmal hunger, locked schools, shut down business activities and the prevailing hardship screening has caused the state large population, it beats my imagination for a government that is made up by cooperate branded “Godly politicians” to be playing pranks with the citizens welfare.

At first, it was a December 20 deadline, like a smoke wave it escaped criticism and December 20 came without honour to the oath. Then, a February 27 deadline was widely circulated without fulfilment on grounds of quite convincing excuses and this gave way for March 31 with which many people have so hoped for only to be extended by three weeks. With these antecedents of insincerity, the question begging for answers now is; can the three week extension be trusted?

While the answer shall only be determined by the test of time, the time is now right to say Kogites had better find other means of livelihood than relying on hopes coming from the government. The state has been sieged with too many distractions that evidently signifies little or no hope for the common man. Schools are closed, businesses are retarding, youths are turning bet kingpins, immoralities are turning business and no hope seem to be in offing. The earlier one adjusts, the better therefore. Moreover, in the end, all man shall carry his cross before the Lord!

Breaking News: Kogi Police Command Denies KSU Students License To Peaceful Protest

The plans of Kogi State tertiary institutions students to embark on a peaceful demonstration may have hit a snag as the state police command has intimated the students’ leadership that it is incapable of assuring their safety.

The state commissioner of police, Wilson Inalegwu, who told the students this evening of the development, advised them against going ahead as it might lead to break down of law and order in Lokoja, the state capital.
In their reactions, leadership of the students have expressed disappointment, describing the excuse given by the police chief as a show of incompetency and deliberate efforts to frustrate them.

He said the students’ leadership were still not deterred by the setback, as they are more determined than ever to ensure they show their dissatisfaction with government insensitivity to the plight of students in the state.

According to the students, while government and its agents have politicised the situation, students, who are futures of the state and country have continued to suffer the brunt.
An obviously disappointed Kogi State University Student, who is also looking forward to the peaceful demonstration, noted that he suspects a deliberate connivance between the police and the state government to deny them opportunity of public display of their anger.

He said they are however undaunted as their dissatisfaction would still be made public in any way possible.

Tension As Supreme Court Decides Wada, Faleke And Bello’s Fate Tomorrow

1
There is tension in Kogi state political circles as the Supreme Court will tomorrow, September 18 decide on the political logjam in the state.
Former governor of the state, Captain Idris Wada and House of Representatives member, Honourable James Faleke, are both seeking to dislodge sitting governor, Alhayi Yahaya Bello.
Faleke is the running mate to the late candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abubakar Audu in the November 21, 2015 election.
Audu’s death paved the way for Bello to emerge the governor based on the APC’s leadership decision, a decision that did not go down well with Faleke.
Both Wada and Faleke appealed the decision of the Appeal Court which upheld the election of Bello as governor one month ago.
According to The Guardian, the supporters of the three major parties in the litigations, Wada, Faleke and Governor Bello have moved to Abuja and are expecting the judgment to be in their favour.
The report stated that the movement to Abuja by Bello’s aides and other government officials has paralysed some government activities.
Governor Bello’s special adviser on media and strategy, Abdulmalik Abdulkareem, expressed confidence that they will come out victorious.
“We are not shaken, we know that the rule of law will take its course, God willing, we are set to make a legal record that will become a precedent.
“The Nigerian legal system is developing and we are happy that our case is adding impetus to the Nigerian judiciary,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of Wada, his special adviser, media and strategy, Jacob Edi, restated his principal’s belief in the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court.
His words: “We expect to win the case, we have always had confidence in the judiciary and we have kept advancing to the last stage, that is why we are at the Supreme Court. The judiciary is the ultimate for the common man.
“The framers of the constitution are aware that at every stage of the case newer interpretations will come up. We believe that the Supreme Court will look deeper into the case, particularly with the minority judgment.
“Whatever decision taken will deepen democracy as the case is novel, it will be a landmark judgment. We have confidence in the independence of the Supreme Court”.
The Supreme Court may hear and decide both appeals the same day and fix a different date for the underlying reasons for the judgments as has been the pattern of the apex court in recent times.
Meanwhile, the Kogi state police command has warned politicians and miscreants against violence after the Supreme Court judgement.
The command said intelligence reports had shown that the two major political parties were planning to either celebrate or cause problems after the delivery of the judgment.
The commissioner of police, Abdulahi Chafe, however told journalists in Lokoja, the state capital, that the command was prepared to protect the lives and property of law-abiding residents of the state.

Opinion: Gov Bello, ASUU and The Vanishing Clouds

By Kingsley Fanwo

Many have written a lot about the ascension of Governor Yahaya Bello to the governorship of Kogi State. Raging arguments for or against have burnt many minds, many “heads” and many fingers.

To those who decided to test the legality in the law courts, the Governor never saw them as enemies. Beyond the rhetorical macabre dance of political orchestra, Governor Yahaya Bello is a refined politician, leader and fearless agitator for the connectedness of the system which was bedeviled by a chemistry of idiocy, corruption, mediocrity, ethnic jingoism, religious bigotry and a people who have developed into failure mentality.

Kogi needed a Yahaya Bello and they got one. A few days after his inauguration, Governor Yahaya Bello instituted a staff verification panel to ascertain the actual strength of the state’s workforce.

I remembered receiving many calls from far and near, advising that the Governor should have waited for the outcome of his tribunal cases before venturing into such a “dangerously sensitive” venture. What made a simple exercise to ascertain the actual strength of the workforce dangerous and sensitive?

They were right. They know the enormity of the rot and the calibre of people behind the filthy lucre. They beneficiaries of ghost workers are established forces with rocky connections within and outside government. They tell every government staff verification is a no go area. And the rot kept robbing us of where we should be as a people.

He dared to tread where giants fell. He held on to his belief. He believes the need to save the State which was surviving on oxygen when he took over was more important than political exigencies. A dehydrated state began to wax stronger.

Before the tribunal judgement, many postulations were advanced. Rightly so, the case was novel. It was on a legal pseudopodium which direction was unknown. Beneficiaries of ghost workers syndrome, cankerworm of eminence, defeated and deflated political fiefdoms and other categories of exasperated political gangsters mounted a ceaseless campaign against the divine government.

And the judgement day came. Governor Yahaya Bello recorded unabatedly, electoral victories from Monday to Friday. What he didn’t fear didn’t kill his aspirations for a better Kogi State.

After the judgements, attention shifted to the screening exercise. He was called names. He was misconstrued. His patriotic zeal to serve was put to test. But he stood his ground. He remained adamant on doing that which is right.

Despite the challenge of the screening committee, the determination to succeed made him set up a back up committee of people with unbroken integrity to ensure the exercise is successful. Today, we have recorded a huge breakthrough that will shock the people.

Let me state here that Governor Yahaya Bello is not insensitive to the plight of the people. On many occasions, he lamented the hardship the people went through during the period of the screening when salaries were put on hold pending when a clean payroll was ascertained. He felt the pains of the people. He cares. Behind the steely look of the bespectacled Governor is a human affection and care.

A surgery is aimed at saving lives. Kogi needed one and that was done. In surgery, there is usually so much pain. But the end justifies the means. I saw what the people went through and I applaud their patience and perseverance. It was tough. But the odd days are going away. Whenever surgery is on, rights are suspended. The decisions to use both Zenith Bank and Access Bank to pay salaries before a new database is built, is aimed at controlling the system before the workers may choose to go back to any bank of their choices. The administration of Governor Yahaya Bello believes in the rule of law and constitutionalism.

With the thousands of ghost workers that have been discovered, Kogi State will be able to save hundreds of millions of naira for infrastructural development. We are aware many were unjustifiably removed from the payrolls. We also know some were erroneously cleared. Someone who claimed to hold employment letter purportedly issued in 1983 was cleared. All of these are currently receiving the attention of the back up committee.

Through our feedback mechanism, we have also discovered more complaints. The Governor has directed the banks to resolve those challenges. The banks will even be working on weekends to ensure genuine workers are not made to suffer.

On Monday 25th July, 2016, the report of the back up committee. To ensure transparency and defeat the fallacies of distractors, the Governor has directed that the presentation should be broadcast live on television and radio stations around the country. This is in line with the premium importance the Governor attaches to getting the Kogi people informed about his efforts.

Having won another of his battle against ghost workers, labour leaders in the State went on strike to demand for salary payment, even as the State had paid over 60% of the MDAs before they went on strike. Though the strike failed as a result of workers’ revolt, it is instructive to know that the people of Kogi State have keyed into the New Direction Agenda of the present administration.

Except in few cases of omission, every cleared worker has been paid arrears of salaries ranging from three to four months.

While the failed strike was in its skeleton, the long drawn leadership tussle in the House of Assembly was resolved. Concerned citizens of the State, led by the Peace Ambassador, Comrade Oladele Nihi and Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan waded into the crisis and got it resolved through cooperation from all parties involved.

A lesson here: when a good leadership is enthroned, the citizens start to take their place. With the court victory, screening success, Assembly peace, cleaner and safer Lokoja, better Lokoja township roads and the mechanism against graft; detractors were washed to the last bank of the river which was the ASUU strike.

ASUU members were owed salary arrears before the present administration came on board. On assumption of office, the Governor assured the academia that he would defray salaries as soon as he was able to secure bailout. But even before the bailout , the Governor paid the lecturers two months salaries within his first 57 days in office! This is a clear declaration of respect for the academic community.

But to the Governor’s surprise, ASUU went ahead to declare strike when students were preparing to start their exams. The Governor appealed to them to resume and consider the plights of the Kogi students. But they remained adamant and unyielding. On securing bailout, the Governor paid the lecturers four months salaries.

And when they refused to resume, the world knew the strike had other intentions. The Governor should be applauded for standing by the economic rights of the Kogi people. No one should go on strike to demand tax exemption. It is an affront against equity and justice.

Again, a listening Governor said he would look into whether they were overtaxed in the past. But he remained determined not to be stampeded into mortgaging the future of the State despite his unimpeachable desire to get the students back to their classrooms.

Even when the students were misguided to storm the street, government acted responsibly by defending the rights of all. This is epochal, honourable, commendable and worthy of emulation.

As we speak, the last cloud is gone as the lecturers have agreed to go back to the class.

Light has come. The Governor has shown how a leader should react. Together, we are moving forward.

The key to excellent leadership is the ability of the leader to take decisions based on the common good.

From now, we know that Kogi cannot be taken for granted anymore. We now know that every force against good will get bad. We now know that responsibility is the mother of greatness. We now know that Kogi is in safe hands.

Fairplus has shown that he is courageous enough to defend our values and interest.

With Fairplus, all Kogites have won fairly.

Why Zenith/Access Bank Accounts Were Opened for Kogi Civil Servants

Following queries and concerns raised that new salary accounts have been opened for Kogi State civil servants in Access and Zenith Banks and account details communicated to them, rather than use their existing salary accounts in various banks, Governor Yahaya Bello has offered some insights into that development and the rationale behind it.

At a forum on Thursday where the issue came up, the governor explained that the latter day bailout funds received by state governments are actually the end product of the federal government standing surety for state governments, enabling them to approach deposit money banks for facilities.

In other words, as against the generally held impression that the federal government has always doled out these funds from its coffers, what happened in the case of Kogi State is that the federal government essentially provided a guarantee for the loan facility to would-be lenders, in favour of the state government.

Due to the prevailing economic situation, cash reserves of commercial banks domiciled with the Central Bank of Nigeria are currently competing for so many pressing needs simultaneously, making it increasingly difficult for the commercial banks to finance loan facilities, especially long-term ones.

Access and Zenith Banks were however able to step up to the plate when Kogi State approached them. They made the first tranche of the state’s bailout funds available, but on one small condition. That the funds remain domiciled in their banks. If you ask me, and without giving it too much thought, it does make perfect business sense.

These banks offer essentially homogeneous services, especially in this case where we are talking salary accounts. It would have been odd were Access and Zenith to be so liberal as to allow other banks benefit from an exclusive market they have basically created. So, rather than make these funds available to the state government to pay workers through other banks, why not internalise the entire process and start reaping accruable benefits from the get go?

This explanation is very necessary as I have come across many wild allegations and insinuations that accounts being opened are for unethical purposes. Given the foregoing, any insinuations and speculations about shady, underhand dealings with regards to the disbursement of these bailout funds are completely unfounded.

I admit that this situation where erroneous notions are already making the rounds should have been preempted. However, I believe it is not too late to correct the wrong impression some of us have held on this issue. Another persistent misconception that also needs correcting concerns the actual nature of the bailout funds itself, as not a few of us still wrongly assume it is a largesse.

Permit me to quickly reiterate that these bailout funds are loan facilities. They are debts structured to be paid back over an extended period, and which will certainly be inherited by the generation coming after us. Please, they are not grants. This explains why state governments have had to first apply for the funds. Individual state governments assess their needs, then make a request to the federal government which is scrutinised.

This process is a work in progress, even as government remains committed to ensuring that all legitimate workers get what is due them. Any complaints and observations should be transmitted through appropriate official channels, and such will be duly looked into so no one is unfairly left behind.

Dangers of Air Pollution; The Earth Needs Help by Jato Ladi

The climate is changing; rain forests are disappearing; our farmlands are becoming infertile; glaciers and polar ice caps are melting and sea levels are risen; rainfall is becoming unpredictable by the day; drought and flooding are common, fresh water is becoming insufficient; wild plants and animals are becoming extinct; the sun is harsh on us; the roads are melting! and Yes! The air is polluted!

Environmental pollution is increasing at an alarming rate. The harmful substances introduced into the air by the activities of mankind, resulting in imbalance in air quality is causing adverse effects and health challenges on living organisms existing on earth.

These pollutants also impact on the earth’s climate, causing global warming. Some of the air pollutants which cause global warming include green house gasses (GHG); one of these is carbon dioxide coming from car and truck exhausts and methane, which comes from gas emitted by livestock, GHG cause global warming by trapping heat from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere. They are supposed to be a natural part of the earth’s atmosphere, but it has increased beyond what the earth can cope with due to the activities of man, causing serious changes in the climate.

Several Nigerian rural settlements that had in the past enjoyed clean, healthy air are now experiencing severe air pollution from several air contaminants, owing to industrialization and geometric increase in population. Some of these pollutants come from the burning of fossil fuel, wood, coal, and exhaust from cars; agricultural activities like biocides, such as pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, burning of waste, etc. additionally, the endless use of generators due to epileptic power supply, also cause air pollution.

These pollutants not only have adverse effects on our health and that of wildlife species and animals, but also affect the climate. A recent study showed that the most polluted city in the world is in Nigeria – Onitsha. Such a discovery gives cause for concern because, the medical implications of this claim is numerous, as it causes deaths, damage to lungs through organic dust particles resulting in asthma, bronchial cancer, reduces oxygen carrying capacity of the blood; inflames upper respiratory passages; induce coughing, damage red-blood cells and kidneys, and also causes jaundice.

A recent study by the World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that 98,000 Nigerian women die annually from smoke inhaled from cooking with firewood. Some of these pollutants affect the fertility of the soil, and also leads to deaths of the animal. In fact, the study goes on to say that “if a woman cooks breakfast, lunch and dinner with firewood, it is the equivalent to smoking between 3 and 20 packets of cigarettes a day.”

Another study by the Harvard scientists which is of serious concern to the developed world, is that honey bees are dying at a scary rate, the implication of this development is that food supply will shrink because, one-third of the food we consume get pollinated by these bees. In fact, due to the importance of these bees, the scientists are already making a robotic honey bee to pollinate some of these foods, nuts and fruits. The major question is if the robotic bee can help in pollination, what about the medicinal value of the honey the bees provide? What are the future side effects of using the robotic bees for pollination?

The Robotic Bee…*

It has become increasingly evident that air pollution is affecting vegetation, as much as it is affecting human and animal lives. Therefore, the fight against pollution has become necessary and urgent, and the time is now!

Cutting down on those activities which result in air pollution is an important step we must all take to live healthy, and also hand over a habitable environment to future generations. We don’t need to wait for the government to come with policies before we can cut down on activities that affect the environment and our health.

Some of these lifestyle changes are key:

1. Conserve energy at home, at work and everywhere; we don’t need to leave the lights on (even if they are energy conserving bulbs) during the day.

2. We must be sure that our tyres are properly inflated

3. Use environmentally safe paints and cleaning agents whenever necessary

4. Refuel your car in the evening, when the weather is cooler

5. Reduce or eliminate fire place and wood stove

6. Avoid bush burning

7. It is essential to cut down on the amount of packaged goods we purchase and the amount of household waste we produce. The process of manufacturing packaging releases harmful emissions into the atmosphere, and its transportation to the dumpsite also release harmful emissions.

8. Reduce the amount of time we spend in the car; whenever we can, we can do short distances on foot or ride a bike to errands.

9. Plant as many trees as you can for every one fell, carbon dioxide that pollute and depletes the ozone layer is food for the trees.

Let us join the clean air campaign to restore back the clean dry air of our cities

Open Letter To Kogi State Governor "Yahaya Bello" - By Kogi State University P.R.O Ogiri Cosmos Ogiri

If SUG is not in support of the strike, I cosmos on my personal capacity is in support of it.

If SUG wants to truncate the strike, I would rather plead that the students join me in Aluta to force the Government to wipe the tears of our fathers, uncles, and brothers who all have bills to pay too.

It is a pity so many thinks it is all about Yahaya Bello but no it is not a fight against him but a fight for justice from KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT which is a continuous process.

It is also unfortunate that our new Vice Chancellor has been caught in this kind of situation, Sir I know you so well that in your capable capacity you will never want the lecturers to go on strike, you gave them 50,000 each during December period (Advanced Payment).

I have heard of your numerous pleas and insatiable letters to ASUU to suspend their strike action. Sir it was as a honor to you (As a new Leader) that ASUU never went on strike during  the last semester exams. May God protect you, your job, your ideas and well wishes for we the students loves you, your innovative and proactive policies.

Mr. Governor, nobody is using anybody against your government. Our lecturers are now chronic debtors. Some of them have families and bills to pay, Sir if at this stage you thinking of witch hunting what would you say when they come for their Earn Allowance for two years? If at all it is witch hunting will you let the youths and leaders of tomorrow suffer?

Will you let those witch hunters hunt our career? The brain is depreciating, education is on the collapse in Kogi State; qualitative primary education, no solidified policies for the secondary education and here we are...no serious educational impact.

Sir. If at all Kogi State University lecturers are not captured in the total bailout, not to talk of Batch A or B. Because as at the time Wada the former governor pleaded the Federal Government for a bail out KSU lecturers salary was not an issue but their earned allowance; Sir will you let our learning spirit diminish?
How much is it that you cannot sincerely source for, 100Billion? No! Just A billion naira.

Yahaya Bello pay our lecturers. Yahaya Bello save our youths from idleness. Yahaya Bello don't let the devil build more work shops in Kogi.

Signed...By Ogiri Cosmos

PS: Keep Sharing Among Friends till They all see it. Watch out for my next move, we must get back to class.

Shocking: Massive Fake Certificates, Fake 900 Schools, Fake Teachers, Rock Kogi

Yahaya Bello - Executive Governor of Kogi State
By Otori Ozigi
It has been discovered that most teachers in Kogi State have suddenly opened  their eyes on how to get rich quick beyond their dreams, through sharp practices, without waiting any longer for their rewards in heaven, and this is authoritative.
After painstaking investigations, it has been finally established that there are massive and rampant cases of fake certificates, being paraded by thousands of primary school teachers in Kogi State payroll through SUBEB.
This was part of the stunning revelations contained in a comprehensive report submitted to the immediate past Governor Capt. Idris Wada by the Interim Management Committee that was inaugurated on 12th May, 2014 to oversee the affairs of SUBEB, sequel to copious petitions that SUBEB had become a cesspool of unbridled corruption and poor leadership style of the former chairman of the board. The report also revealed that  there are no fewer than 900 fake Schools and hundreds of fake teachers in all the 21 Local Government Education Areas of the State.
A copy of the report exclusively obtained by this independent online journalist last week, stated that this unwholesome development have been discovered to be causing grievous damages to the future of school children in the state.
According to the report, there are rampant cases of fake certificate in most LGEAs especially NCE Certificates, purportedly obtained from NITT and college of educations.
It was discovered also that during the extensive investigations, that a good number of teachers in the state could not speak good English, even at very senior level. To arrest this ugly development, the report recommended that teachers should be promoted based on examination and interview.
In the same vein, the state government has been urged to urgently set up a high powered committee to carry out verification of school teachers in the state because of the menace of fake teachers that have found their ways into the system.
This report which was never implemented by the then governor Captain Idris Wada before the end of his tenure, also suggested that all qualified teachers posted to LGEAs head offices should be transferred back to the field immediately, to solve the challenges of gross under staffing being experienced in many school across the state. It was recommended that failure of such teachers to go back to the class room should result in compulsory retirement.
In the same vein, all those teachers without original NCE certificates or letters of attestation from such schools, should be laid off immediately. The report also recommend, the need for adequate supervision of schools and LGEAs by members of SUBEB.
The committee furthered discovered that several teachers in LGEAs pay rolls were found to be working else where i.e Civil Defense Corps in Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt.
It was also discovered that most educational secretaries including sectional heads in LGEAs were allegedly fraudulent, as they issue and backdated several new employment letters as conduit pipe to defraud the state running into millions of naira.
The state government was also advised to flush out all fake teachers that found their ways into the pay roll through the educational secretaries and their collaborators.
There were also rampant cases of dead teachers being replaced by the educational secretaries without consultation with SUBEB, while some head teachers and sectional heads were discovered to have inserted fresh names in their pay rolls through which they were defrauding the state government of millions of naira monthly.
Another shocking discovery by the committee were cases where letters of appointment of some teachers had been backdated in other to escape 2010 embargo on state government policy.
Meanwhile, one of the key components of the change agenda of Alh. Yahaya Bello led administration is the total war on corruption and other financial crimes which he had sworn to pursue with all seriousness during his tenure in office.

OPEN LETTER TO ALL KOGI STATE BORN CELEBRITIES. By Sunrich

Open Letter To All Successful Artist From Kogi State By Sunrich

To start with I will like to throw a big shout out to music and Nollywood stars from the confluence State, Kogi to be precise.

Acts like the great music mystro DARE, who did not hide in his father’s shadow but created a niche for himself as one of the foremost Nigerian music acts both nationally and internationally. Another is the wonderful singing sensation YQ, with his unique voice, others are TUNDE ENDUTE, JUMABE, “This Year” Cronner JAWON, One of the most sorted-after music producers GOSPEL ON DA BEATZ, among others.

It is with great pride that youths from Kogi State like to associate with these stars, but these idols have failed to reciprocate the love and give back to their home land. one will argue that people naturally like to associate with success, but that is beside the point.

Kogi is richly endowed with heavily talented minds. From Singers to dancers, producers, rappers, models, comedians, MC’s, song writers, instrumentalist and all sort of money making talents. Those gifted in sports are heavily choked in both secondary and tertiary institutions in the state. They are all waiting for an opportunity to shine.

Let me briefly ask these question, did any of you get to were you are right now on your own accord? yes you worked hard, yes you prayed, but even God makes use of people who make themselves available to bless others.

Shout out to people like Olamide, his contributions to the Nigerian indigenous Music Industry has gone beyond just spiting mad flows in his local dialect and encouraging others like Phyno, Morrel, Zoro, CDQ, Splash to do the same, he has also groomed young talents like Lil Kesh, Adekunle Gold, Chinko Ekun, Viktoh among others, and these young acts has also made a name for themselves, because they were provide with the right platform to establish their various acts. All these young stars started from the streets of Lagos just like Olamide, he came from the Street of Lagos to lamb light, but he never forgot his roots.

This is why Lagos has become a hub for entertainment in Nigeria. Our beloved Kogi rooted stars need to remember their roots with pride and devotion, come home and groom young talents too, it is your duty to your father land. The pride with which Kogites have associated themselves with these stars need to be duely reciprocated. It is absurd that Kogi is still one of the least talked about states in Nigeria, it’s government has failed it citizens, but it is high time we all realize that we should not leave the progress of the state in the hands of it leaders alone, Individuals, Organizations, Kogites in the Diaspora and my major concern Kogi born Celebrities must rise up to the challenge and make Kogi a state to be reckoned with.

After all this long talk, watin I da try talk be say make DARE ART ALADE, TUNDE EDNUT , JAYWON, JUMABE, PRAIZ, GOSPEL ON DA BEAT, BRAIN ON THE MIX, SLEEK, YQ, JOSEPH BENJAMIN and the rest try come back home, make them come groom young and up coming too. One wise man tell me say “yonder no fit be like house, no matter how far we you waka go, na house you go still come rest” Meaning no place like home. E da pain me dat is why I decide to speak put, na who hungry wa talk go see food chop, who silent go die in silent.

I hope you all will see sense in my nonsense and do the right thing. I pray you all continue to grow in strength, and your fame would never end in the farm. God Bless Nigerian Music Industry, God bless Kogi Music Industry, God bless Kogi born Stars, God bless Kogi Up and Coming, God bless Kogi, God bless Sunrich Omo Aiyedogbon.
