Kogi Govt Forcefully Engaged School Children To Clean Lokoja Township Roads On Children’s Day

…Lacks the real essense of Children’s Day celebrations.
It is common knowledge that children are the future of every country. They are the future of a great nation only if given a solid foundation on which a better society can be built. The direction of a nation therefore can be gauged by the importance that nation places on its children and youths.

The Children’s Day in Nigeria was created in 1964 as inspired by the United Nations children’s efforts. It is marked on the 27th day of May each year and recognised as a school holiday for them. The standard practice is to select children from each school to participate in a match-past to salute the state leader in the stadium in competition with other schools. The schools are selected for first, second and third prices respectively, won at the march past. This renders the celebration education based, thus depriving others that are unable to enrol in schools due to poverty.

In the case of Kogi State, the government through the honorable Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, The Kogi state SUBEB Chairman, Mrs Deborah Osatimehin and the state commissioner for Education, Dr Sunday Tolorunleke on Saturday took the students to the streets of Lokoja to sanitized the street said its the real essence of the celebration. This new development in Kogi State is so bad and the children are been exposed to danger on their special day. They were forcefully engaged to uproot grasses with their bare hands on their day of celebration. This is unfair. This is against the child’s right law. The children of Kogi State deserve apology from the state government.

Despite all the publications made by office of the Commissioner for women affairs and social development, Honorable Bolanle Amupitan, one would be expecting an elaborate celebrations for kogi children on that day instead of taking them to the street for sanitation of lokoja roads.

The government should apologize to the Kogi State children for violating their right on their special day.

Kogi State Governor, Alh Yahaya Bello has assured the people of the state that Kogi will focus on agriculture to win against recession.

The Governor disclosed this on Sunday while speaking through his Director General on Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo, saying the massive agricultural activities at Omi Dam is one of the signature projects of his administration to negotiate the recession bend through upscaling of agricultural production.

The Governor said his administration has identified agriculture as the Savior of the Nigerian economy through food production, youth engagement and the value chain of a year-round farming which the project offers.

“We are targeting massive wealth creation at the Omi Dam Irrigation Project. A number of investors are already there and we hope to push higher in the coming months and open a vista of opportunities for the people. Our target is to generate over 50,000 jobs at Omi and engage our youth in commercial agriculture as a way of disengaging them from crimes. It is already paying off as we are also exploring such opportunities in other Senatorial Districts across the state”.

Bello said his administration is working with a number of agricultural programs and policies that will serve as impetus for higher agricultural production, expressing satisfaction with the seamless mechanism for fertilizer supply to improve yield.

“The New Direction administration is committed to food security through commercial agriculture and we want investors to keep trooping into the state to tap into our great agricultural potentials. Kogi is ready to feed Nigeria”.

The Governor called on the youth to form agricultural cooperatives and be prepared to be job creators rather than job seekers, assuring them of continued support by his administration.

I Started Robbing When I Was Seven – Suspect (Photo)

A 20-year-old robbery suspect, Yusuf Lawal, who was recently arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, says he started robbing at the age of seven.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Lawal, aka Eletu, and another member of his gang, Taju Alabi, aka Kolo, were arrested in the Ebute Meta area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that officers of the Anti-Robbery Squad attached to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, were patrolling Kadiri and Kano streets around 4am when they heard a cry for help.

A group of robbers, numbering 19, were said to be operating in the community at the time.

The police, while responding to the call for help, arrested 20-year-old Lawal.

He was said to be dispossessing a victim of money, phones, and other valuables.

His accomplice, however, stabbed the victim and fled the scene.

Lawal, who is the only child of his parents, was taken to the SDCI for interrogation, during which he led the police to make other arrests.

The Lagos State indigene said he started with petty robbery and refused to stop even after his father had told him to.

The father of one said he turned out badly due to peer pressure.

He said, “I am the only child of my parents. I grew up not knowing my mother, who died when I was still a child. I don’t know what my father does for a living.

“My father could not correct me because I always overpowered him whenever he attempted to do so. I later ran away from home and started living with a friend in Idi-Oro, Mushin.

“I started robbing when I was seven after I quit primary school. My friend, Sule, introduced me to robbery and we always went out to rob residents. We stole phones, money, and other valuables.

“Also, we usually rob very early in the morning. I will turn a new leaf if the police can release me.”

There was a mild drama when the second suspect, Alabi, denied knowing Lawal and said he had never participated in any of the robberies.

Lawal, while confronting him with his sin, said, “On two different occasions, I stole phones and gave them to you to sell, which you did and we later shared the money.

“You saw me living large and you asked me for the secret, and I told you. We have been doing this together so tell the truth. When we were robbing people, you should have known this will be the end.”

However, Alabi, who is 18-years-old, subsequently owned up, adding that he had only gone for three operations.

“Yes, he’s my friend and we have been friends since childhood. We met at Mushin. I work at a carwash and I am also a bus conductor. I have only stolen three phones. It is true that we rob people,” he added.

A police source said the suspects had been cooperating with the police and giving useful information.

“They were 19 in number that participated in the robbery that morning. We were on a patrol that morning when we received a distress call. We quickly deployed our men and Lawal was caught red-handed.

We are on the trail of the other suspects, and soon, they will be arrested,” he added.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Joe Offor, when contacted for comment, promised to call back but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Samson Siasia Pleads With Kidnappers To Release Mum – “I Don’t Have Money To Give You”

Following the kidnapping of his mother in Bayelsa, Head Coach of the Flying Eagles, Samson Siasia has told the kidnappers they made a mistake because he has no money to give them.

“Right now I am confused, from the story I got, three men on motorbike stormed my parents house in my village Odoni in Bayelsa State, shot sporadically into the air before taking my old mother away on a bike,” said Siasia, who is with the team in Gambia preparing for the African Youth Championship in Senegal.

“What do they expect from me? I don’t have money, I am right now on national duty, and need all the time to concentrate on this very important national task, so I beg them to please release my mother so that I can concentrate on this task of qualifying the U-23 National Team for the men’s football event of the Rio Olympics.”

Siasia pleaded for his mother’s release, saying she was the only taking care of his visually impaired father.

The kidnapping has already been reported to the police, with the Nigerian Football Federation also pleading for Mrs Siasia’s release.

“This is quite disturbing,” NFF president Amaju Pinnick said. “We are just preparing for a crucial 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, and the U-23 boys are already in The Gambia for a pre-Cup of Nations training camp. Why this?

“All we can do is to appeal to the kidnappers to free Samson Siasia’s aged mother. Samson is on a critical national assignment presently and the last he needs is this kind of distraction.”

KogiDecides: Why Ebira Should Support Prince Abubakar Audu – Tom Ohikere

As the November 21st Kogi Governorship election gather momentum, the head, Media and Publicity, Audu/Faleke Campaign Organization, Dr. Tom Ohikere, has implored the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District to vote en masse for the APC governorship candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu.

According to Ohikere, Prince Audu has remained, today, the best governor, in terms of infrastructural development and has demonstrated uncommon leadership traits.

Ohikere, who commended the people of Ebiraland for the warm reception accorded the APC-team led by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, also applauded them for their show of support for the party and their maturity during the rally.

He promised that Prince Audu, when elected, would help in entrenching the programmes of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government, adding that since the people of the state are ready to embrace the change mantra, the Ebira people cannot afford to do otherwise.

The Campaign head for the APC in Kogi State said despite the falsehood that are being peddled by the soon-to-be opposition party in Kogi State, the PDP, the people are wiser and are ready to judge both of the candidate on the basis of their capacity.

He opined: Come to think of it, the Prince Audu that the people of Kogi State know is a man that is interested in the development of all sectors of the state economy, because he knows that it is through that the social problems confronting the people can be addressed.

The incumbent governor and his handlers are busy raising issues where there is none, rather than telling Kogians how they can bring development to them because everything is totally down at the moment.

On Ebira agenda, he said: As a bonafide Ebira man myself I am representing the interests and desires of my people. I am committed to the Ebira agenda because nationality question is a major factor in any federal system.

He continued: We must not reduce the Ebira agenda to a mere power rotation. It includes but not limited to that. Youth employment, infrastructural development, completion of Ajaokuta project, total activation of the Itakpe Iron ore company and commercialization of our cultural festival among other important issues combine to form the much valued Ebira agenda.

These are issues that cannot be totally achieved within the confines of the power and resources of the state. That is why we need a federated and nationalistic party like the APC to achieve the totality of the Ebira agenda

Ministerial Confirmation: We Are Now United – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the confirmation of all the ministerial nominees by the Senate, despite some misgivings by the opposition, has shown that the party’s legislators are ready to work with the executive toward the implementation of its agenda for the benefit of all Nigerians.

The APC added that the confirmation had revealed that there is no longer any division within the APC family.

“The cohesion and unity exhibited by the APC Senators on Thursday have shown that our legislators are ready to work with the executive and the party to ensure that the agenda of the party is implemented for the benefit of all Nigerians,’” the party said in a statement issued in Lagos yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

“We commend all our members and leaders in the Senate and indeed the leadership of the APC for this show of unity,” it said.

APC said democracy was at work in the Senate yesterday, despite the decision of the opposition PDP Senators to stage a walk out over the confirmation of former Governor Chibuike Amaechi.

“It is part of democracy that while the minority can have their say, the majority will have their way. Therefore, the decision of the PDP Senators to walk out is nothing but democracy in action,” the party said.

It enjoined the entire National Assembly to continue to work with the executive arm of government for the overall interest of Nigeria and its people.

“With the stage now set for the federal cabinet to be in place, we implore all Nigerians, irrespective of their party affiliation, to support President Muhammadu Buhari in his onerous task of making Nigeria great again,” APC said.

Nigeria Earns N472bn From Cocoa, Others

The country earned a total sum of $2.4bn (N472bn) from the exportation of cocoa, rubber, and other non-oil commodities within the 2014 fiscal period, figures obtained from the Nigerian Export Promotion Council have revealed.

The country’s export figure of $2.4bn for 2014, according to trade statistics from the NEPC, represents a decline of 19.19 per cent over the $2.97bn (N585bn) earned in the previous year.

A breakdown of the non-oil receipts of $2.4bn showed that cocoa exports with a total amount of $666.45m accounted for the highest non-oil export earnings, followed by raw hides, skins and leather with $487.97m.

Others are oil seeds, grains and plant/straw, amounting to $389.78m; aluminium, $113.35m; tobacco, $109.05m; tins, $96.32m; edible fruits and nuts, $75.24m; rubbers, $70.03m and footwear, $62.89m.

The rest are copper, $59.6m; fish and crustaceans, $55.68m; plastics, $54.63m; lead, $46.65m; nickel, $27.35m; cottons, yarns and woven, $21.87m.

In terms of country of destination, the NEPC document indicated that Netherlands, with a total amount of $456.96m, accounted for Nigeria’s highest non-oil export revenue.

Others are ECOWAS, $350.8m; Italy, $344.21m; Japan, $211.25m; India, $209.4m; Turkey, $116.8m; Spain, $102.2m; Germany, $100.97m; China, $86.3m; Vietnam, $85.4m and the United States, $81.6m.

The Chief Executive Officer, NEPC, Mr. Olusegun Awolowo, said the agency had been at the forefront of the diversification of the Nigerian economy, adding that this had been further reinforced by the recent decline in the price of crude oil in the global market.

While admitting that the drop in the price of oil had led to reductions in government revenue with pronounced negative effects on different sectors of the economy, he said that NEPC had identified 13 National Strategic Export Products to replace oil.

The 13 products are palm oil, cocoa, cashew, sugar, rice, iron ore, metals, aluminium, and auto parts.

Others are petroleum products, fertilizer/urea, petrochemicals and methanol.

He said, “The expectations we have is to explore the possibility of investing in priority areas that we have highlighted.

“We need to attract counterpart investments into priority areas by investors such as the agricultural sector. We need to fastback trade event information and we want to support capacity development for exporters.”

He said the potential of the 13 products, which cut across key sectors of the economy would be maximised through investments, capacity development, innovation and formidable partnerships.

Olusegun Obasanjo Ex-President rejects PDP's plea to help rebuild party

It has emerged that some People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders have repeatedly begged the former president Olusegun Obasanjo to help salvage the party, which the Senate President, David mark described as ‘dying.’

According to Premium Times, Obasanjo refused the party’s plea for him to return and help rebuild it ahead of future elections.

In February 2015, the former president publicly renounced his PDP membership at a forum in Abeokuta, Ogun state and directed that his membership card be torn right at the meeting.

Report says those mounting pressure on Obasanjo to return to the party include serving governors and lawmakers. They are said to be making the pleas through visits and via the telephone.

Sources close Obasanjo reportedly overhead him recently telling one of the PDP chieftains on the telephone that party politics is over for him.

“I’m done with party politics here on earth and in heaven. Period,” the former PDP Board of trustees member was quoted to have said.

Speaking in a telephone interview with Premium Times, Obasanjo confirmed that he has been pressured to return to the PDP, stating he will never.

He said, “I’m not ready to discuss partisan politics because I’m done with it. I agree that Nigeria needs a strong and viable opposition and I will continue to encourage that. I will continue to do that even without belonging to a political party. I have moved beyond party politics.”

Following the March 28 presidential election where President Goodluck Jonathan lost to rtd. General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, the PDP has suffered internal crisis.

In the past weeks, PDP leadership has been shaky, with some of its members demanding the party’s National Chairman Adamu Mua’zu and other executive members to resign. They were accused of working against the party during the elections.

Wicked Boss: Mechanic Inflicts Deep Cut On Apprentice Head For Not Concentrating (See Photo)

”Mans inhumanity humanity to man”, best describes the incident that occurred at the Utako mechanic workshop, behind Beggar Yard, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja as a young man identified as Murphy left his apprentice with an unimaginable cut on his head for looking away while a car was being fixed at his workshop.

The incident which happened on Monday resulted into rushing the apprentice identified as Joseph Pam to a nearby clinic with his head severely broken.

An eyewitness told DAILY POST that Murphy who is known to be highly temperamental broke Joseph’s head with a chain after he looked away while work was ongoing.

Pam, who hails from Jos, Plateau State told DAILY POST that he had been an apprentice under Murphy for one year and ten months. He said, ” I did not do anything to my Oga. While he was working on a vehicle, I turned to look elsewhere. This infuriated him, and out of anger, he attack me with a chain, leaving me with severe cut on my head.”

Corroborating what Pam said, a fellow apprentice under Murphy who identified himself as David, said “Pam and Murphy were working on a car together and at a point, the victim lost concentration, and before anybody knew what was happening, oga hit Pam with a chain on his head, leaving him with a very deep cut, and he was not even sorry about it”

David further added that when Murphy attacked Pam, he rushed the victim to a nearby pharmacy where he was treated.

“We were asked to pay N1,500. I had just a thousand naira on me, but another customer in the pharmacy completed the money, Oga Murphy was not concerned about the health condition of his apprentice. Funny enough, Pam has served with him for one year and ten months.” David said.

When DAILY POST correspondent visited the scene of the attack, some people were seen in groups discussing what transpired.

A food vendor, Bisi who condemned the act noted that the culprit should be brought to book, as nothing should warrant attacking his apprentice with a chain.

Murphy, while talking with Daily POST showed no remorse for his action. He simply said he attacked his apprentice with a chain out of anger, adding that Pam was was very stubborn and never listens.

Lamenting his inability to contact the police, Pam said he could not report the case to the police because he had nobody here in Abuja to fight his course but pleaded with our reporter to help bring Murphy to justice.
