How To Know Who To Vote, Kogi State University As A Case Study - By Cosmos Ogiri

Kogi State University is a tertiary institution of learning in Kogi State. I was admitted to Kogi State University in the year 2011. From 2011 till date we have had Students Union Leaders everyone despite disruptions. These set of leaders left different lessons to study and come up with a broad but a guiding fact to knowing who to vote for in an election.
Before you would say I have no rights to speak on who to vote in an election. I passed through same fact and I was the Public Relations Officer in one of those sets of leaders that left one or two lessons to serve as a case study in students unionism.
1. Background of Responsiblities handled in the past. Let's do a research on whom to vote. What is the background of responsibilities handled and what is the performance rate. Was he a class representative? What is majority of those represented saying?
2. Responsible lifestyle is a factor of knowing who best to vote. Just like it is said that "you are addressed the very way you dress" same why it is true that someone's mentality and behavior affects his sense of lifestyle. Ask around and don't fall for physical outfit.
3. Responsiveness to other people's issues. Yes! This is very important. How many selfless programs have this candidate attended or organised. Is he in any none governmental organization to provide platforms for selfless humanitarian response? This is very paramount. A leader who is not responsive to selfless service is only going there for selfish services when elected.
Above is not all but just a three point to guide you. Further more I want us to elaborate while narrowing to Kogi State University.
4. Popularity: this is very deceitful and so many persons have used this as a yieldstick to knowing who to vote in an election. People became popular for bad reasons as well as good reasons. Which one is this person we are going to vote.
5. Profession: Employing a doctor for been intelligent as a lawyer is the fastest way to kill public sanity. Everyone can become a politician but let's the fact be said that profession is all about the mentality. That's why a Doctor can perform well as Governor of a state and a political scientific may not have the professional mendate to perform better than a management graduate who is also good in public affairs and management.
6. Level of Desperate, those desperate to become leaders as proved in the past that a lot promises was made but none was accomplished. So be mindful of those that are ready to do everything to elected.
7. Level of commitment. What is the level of commitment to the plight of the immediate community and what was the contribution of such a person?
8. Mission, an aspirant that has no clear mission in either a single word or in a single sentence is a wrong note.
9. Calibre of supporters and interest. This is nail. Hit this hard. We all know what God fathers are? What are their interest? For the students or for their self?
What has these Godfathers done for students welfarism? If na juju this one must stop abeg.
10. Powers from above, be very smart in checking to know who the management and government is supporting so you won't vote in school fee increment. Sponsored candidate always come with an agenda.
Only a final note I don't know it all. Let's learn from the past and make our today the best we can make out of it.

Government Will Do Everything To Avert Doctors’ Strike- Kogi Governor

Kogi State Governor, Alh. Yahaya Bello has assured the people of the state that his administration will “do everything within the legal arc to avert industrial action by members of the Nigerian Medical Association, Kogi State Chapter”.
Speaking through his Director General on Media and Strategy, Kingsley Fanwo, the Governor said he will stop at nothing to protect the right of the Kogi citizens to quality healthcare.
“NMA has intimated government of its readiness to go on strike over some issues that bothers on the recently concluded staff verification exercise. But before Government could call for a round table dialogue to listen to their grievances, NMA made their intention public to create an atmosphere of panic.
“The Staff Verification Exercise received the backing of labor. NMA was represented in the exercise and they signed the report, which indicated acceptance by the umbrella body for Medical Doctors in the State. The wisdom behind the inclusion of NMA representative in the screening was to give expert advice and lead the Committee to make informed decisions. For NMA to turn around to condemn the report is a betrayal of agreement and an attempt to condemn the home they joined hands with government in building.
“The decision to unnecessarily punish the Kogi people by going on strike is unfortunate and will be resisted by government. In an era of recession, it is an economic sin against the people to pay workers for doing nothing. We will explore legal and administrative avenues to stop the ill-fated strike.
“As we place an eye on the window for negotiations and diplomatic settlement; this government will place its other eye on the ongoing recruitment process going on in the health sector to bridge any gap which may tend to endanger the healthcare of our people”.
The Governor urged NMA not to declare war on the state, saying their primary responsibility is to save lives and ensure the healthcare of the people of the state.
“Our doors are always open. We will always listen to the unionists. We believe in inclusiveness but we will not hesitate to take drastic decisions that will help the people of our dear state”.
The Governor thanked members of the Nigerian Medical Association for their patience and cooperation with his administration, urging them to seize the cordial relationship between them and the government to explore negotiation as a peaceful means of resolving industrial disputes. He said his administration will continue to work with the doctors to achieve his goals on healthcare for the people of Kogi State.

Doctors In Kogi Down Tools Over Unpaid Salaries

The Kogi chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has directed its members to embark on an indefinite strike over government’s failure to pay doctors’ salaries.
A communique jointly signed by its Chairman, Dr. Tijani Godwin, and Secretary, Dr. Zubair Kabiru, after an emergency congress on Tuesday in Lokoja, said that the strike would commence on Wednesday.
The NMA expressed disappointment over government’s inability to pay the doctors’ salaries and arrears as agreed two months ago, and wondered why it was difficult for government to fulfill basic commitments.
“We have presented our demands to government, but none has been met; we are left with no other option than to go on strike,” the association said.
The medical doctors frowned at government’s refusal to clear nine doctors during the screening exercise even after they provided all necessary documents, and also decried the consistent deductions in their salaries and arrears.
The association advised doctors intending to pick up employment with the Kogi Government to be “very cautious” as many of their colleagues were owed huge sums.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NMA embarked on a warning strike in December, 2016 but suspended the action after government promised to pay their salaries.
Government, however, reneged on that promise, forcing the doctors to abandon the hospitals again.
