WHEN KOGI VARSITY LECTURERS, GOVERNMENT LOCK HORNS
It is glaring that the Kogi State University students have always suffered the consequential effect of the frictions that has engulfed the state governmentand the lecturers in recent times.
The popular adage that says when two elephant fights the grass suffers is a quintessential example of what has played out in the confluence state in the last three years.
Kogi State University (KSU) lecturers and the state government have comfortably acted the role of the elephant, while the students have unavoidably played the role of the grass.
The academic staff union of University (ASUU), Kogi State University chapter had cumulatively embarked on a Nine months industrial action and still counting over the last three years. The interminable industrial action has become the hallmark of the institution, and unarguably, this has placed KSU as one of the top institutions in Nigeria that suffer from a continuous industrial action.
The reason for the actions of the striking union is not farfetched, is basically anchored on Non-Payment of salaries and other dividends for several months.
This intermittent down tool has left the university with no concrete academic calendar.
Disruptions in academic programs in higher institution serve as a non-motivational factor tothe students. It discourages them from learning. It is not surprising therefore that during strike actions, most students are seen involved in diverse activities such as sexual immorality, cyber scam, pool betting, unnecessary gossips, watching of films and reading comic materials for entertainment purposes rather than reading their books.
In the long run, they soon forget about academics and are no longer prepared for class activities which negatively affect their learning capability.
Conspicuously, the relationship between the Governor Yahaya Bello led administration and ASUU is completely paradoxical to that of Late Prince Abubakar Audu the founder of the institution and the union.
The down tool ASUU embarked in 2015 is still taking its toll on the institution as students that graduated from Theatre Art, and Economics department in that year are yet to be mobilized for the compulsory one year national youth service. While their counterpart from other institution have completed the program. Also, the second semester result for some level in the same year is still pending.
In 2016, the union embarked on yet another action between April to July, as most expected the academic calendar was affected. Students were compelled to resume immediately after the New Year celebration for their second semester examination with less time to prepare.
Barely two days after the conclusion of the second semester examination the Joint Action Committee (JCC) comprising of all the tertiary Institutions in the state, embarked on an indefinite strike. JCC demanded for the immediate reconstruction of governing council in all institution, and the payment of eight months arrears of salaries to all categories of staff.
While most tertiary institution has completed their first semester for the 2017/2018 academic session kogi state university is yet to begin.
Education is a right and not a privilege, therefore, the Government should always endeavor to honor whatever agreement reached with the academic communities.
The protracted strikes that have forcibly kept KSU students outside the four walls of the university can be averted if necessary steps are taken to build a good relationship between both parties. It is worth emphasizing that any government with a poor education system is heading towards a black future.
At the same time, the striking unions of higher should device other means other than strike to resolve aggrieved issues. Strike action should always be the last resort. This is because of the negative effect frequent strikes have on students and the entire academic community.

Breaking News: Kogi Police Command Denies KSU Students License To Peaceful Protest
The plans of Kogi State tertiary institutions students to embark on a peaceful demonstration may have hit a snag as the state police command has intimated the students’ leadership that it is incapable of assuring their safety.
The state commissioner of police, Wilson Inalegwu, who told the students this evening of the development, advised them against going ahead as it might lead to break down of law and order in Lokoja, the state capital.
In their reactions, leadership of the students have expressed disappointment, describing the excuse given by the police chief as a show of incompetency and deliberate efforts to frustrate them.
He said the students’ leadership were still not deterred by the setback, as they are more determined than ever to ensure they show their dissatisfaction with government insensitivity to the plight of students in the state.
According to the students, while government and its agents have politicised the situation, students, who are futures of the state and country have continued to suffer the brunt.
An obviously disappointed Kogi State University Student, who is also looking forward to the peaceful demonstration, noted that he suspects a deliberate connivance between the police and the state government to deny them opportunity of public display of their anger.
He said they are however undaunted as their dissatisfaction would still be made public in any way possible.

AN OPEN LETTER TO ASUU KSU CHAPTER AND HIS EXCELLENCY GOV YAHAYA BELLO
I am a student of Kogi state university ( KSU) addressing this letter to all concerned ASUU(KSU CHAPTER) members and to his Excellency Gov. Yahaya Bello
Greetings to all ASUU members who are jointly fighting a fight for a positive outcome which in turn is indeed causing a lot of mental, academic and moral set back in the lives of every students of this prestigious citadel of learning (KSU)
It is not out of point that you (ASUU) are fighting for your entitlements of five months salaries the Kogi State Government is owing you.
However, if what we the students are hearing that His Excellency, Gov Yahaya Bello offered to pay you a four months salary at a stretch and you still refused putting things into considerations is true, Then you(ASUU) are leaving us with no other conclusion but to say that ASUU is no longer a neutral body but a pure political machinery set out to destroy the reign of this present state government administration.
The questions I want to ask are these..
1. Is it because His Excellency is not an igala man by tribe? Since majority of the governing bodies of ASUU are Igalas?
2. Has his Excellency Yahaya Bello been the one owing you for these months of unpaid salaries?
3. Why didn't you (ASUU) fight former Gov WADA down to the finish?
4. Is ASUU being fair enough?
If only ASUU can be more sincere to itself, then I see no reason why this strike should last longer than it is now..
To Mr Governor on the other hand, if you truly value the educational welfare of Kogi state youths, then I expect you to use your position well and wisely.
I know this letter will go viral. And I hope it reaches the appropriate quarters. God bless you all..
Signed Comr James Adamu

Asuu update: There Was No Scheduled Asuu Congress Today [Read Why]
There was no scheduled ASUU Congress today.
The Union has restated that until the state government is willing to meet its demand completely, it would not give in to pressure of calling off the strike.
Least we get carried away the union demands among are not limited to but also payment of the remaining one month salary, payment of subsequent salaries not latter than 7th of every new month, and payment of their end allowances.

#Ksu/PAAU Strike Update: The End Time of Strike
Also, rumour has it that;
Ksu management received a four month salary last week Thursday but are yet to credit the account of the lecturers. The lecturers are waiting to see the alert of the salary of (Jan, Feb, mar, and Apr) before deciding whether to call off the strike or the strike should continue.
If they see the alert today or tomorrow, then there will be a meeting before the end of this week. probably school might resume next week
They added that: Bello has paid four mouth but the salaries is not enough for the workers.
The workers salaries is 180 million per month & Bello gave them 120 million per month. The chance is 50/50 for now.
Let’s pray for God to touch their heart.
2hrs ago, The P.R.O of Student Union Government PAAU/KSU Chapter updated His Facebook Profile Congratulating KSU/PAAU Lecturers, he also shows his utmost appreciation to the Governor Bello and also added that this wasn’t the 100% bargain. Let’s wait for ASUU Congress Anyways.

Asuu Strike: Kogi State University SUG President Philip Omeipha Speaks On Cancelling The Planned Protest Till Further Notice
SUG Prsident Philip Shaibu Omepa posted this on his facebook timeline yesterday :
"Good morning my fellow students. The wave of hope blew towards us immediately after the tribunal case when the governor himself during the press interview told the
general public and the students that in less than 10 days the
issue will be resolved and we will get back to our various classes. I couldn't believe this since they have made several promises in d past so I had to make contacts to his various
appointees and aides and we were assured that d governor has decided to make d university his priority and they are making arrangements to pay and that the notification for the protest actually got to d desk of his excellency the
governor. Now in view of this, u will all believe me all we want is how this strike issue will be resolved within a short time so we can get back to class.
So it has been deliberated
and agreed by the students union government that the protest which is slated to be 9th in anyigba will no longer hold but if government fails to keep up their 10 days demand, we all will be matching to lugard house on 16th of dis month I.e next week Thursday which I believe by then the 10 days promised might have elapsed.
I want to urge every student that we re working in one spirit for the betterment of our own institution and SUG is there in dis administration to be close to students, stand and fight for
their right. We also want to thank every student for their patience and understanding with us. We are fighting for same cause.

Kogi State University Asuu Strike Update
Here is a Reports From the meeting held on Monday 25th 2016.
We could recall that in our last publication by Ogiri Cosmos; Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kogi State
University Chapter where urged to suspend their industrial action by the Governor of the State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello at a meeting with the leadership of the union.
The Acting Chairman of ASUU in the Kogi State University, Comrade Gbenga Aina in his promises assured the Governor that the Union will go back to the negotiation table to give consideration to his call.
Currently they exist claims and counter claims that some political dons in kogi state are bent on frustrating Yahaya Bello's administration. But the Acting ASUU chairman has refuted such claims that the Industrial Action is politically motivated and in fulfilling his promise, the union met yesterday in Natural Sciences to deliberate on the reports and plea from the state Governor.
The meeting which was graced by many lecturers with optimism for good news but later saw a bunch of dissatisfied lecturers amidst the current economic situation in Nigeria.
The question is for how long shall we continue to beg, take loans and buy on credits to eat, feed the family, pay bills, masters fee e.t.c?
It is a truism that the current administration is now owing the university lecturers but government is one which has continuity as its characteristic. If not then, they is no hope for the lecturers who worked to get paid.
The farmers in Kogi State are reaping and smiling to this years cashew boom but not Kogi State University lecturers.
In consideration of the Governor's plea, sincerity and truth is a steadfast. ASUU started their meeting but Ended In Deadlock and meeting adjoined.
Reports says the Terms Offered by the State Government was not Favourable To members of ASUU.

NEWS: Open Letter to Kogi State Gov. Concerning the Ongoing Strike – NANS | @AIT_Online X @Channelstv
NANS OPEN LETTER TO KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT ON THE 1 MONTH OLD STRIKE AFFECTING KOGI STATE UNIVERSIT STUDENTS
Your Excellency Sir, Captain Idris Ichalla Wada, the Executive Governor of Kogi State,
The entire students of Kogi State University have been pushed home since early March due to the internal ongoing ASUU strike which till now you have not resolved.
We are bittered because the students who were affected in last year’s strike which lasted for over eight (8)months are now facing a double trouble by staying home for over a month plus now.
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students NANS (Kogi axis) and the institution’s (SUG) respectively have waited for the response of the State Government under your leadership to meet a suitable negotiation with the striking lecturers under (ASUU Kogi State University chapter) but all proved futile.
At this stage, we the student’s leaders are appealing to your Excellency, Governor Idris Wada and his entire cabinet to solve this problem, because With the actions of the State Government, it can be said that they don’t have the interest of education and students at heart.
But we students won’t let our future be trampled on, We thereby give the State Government seven (7)days ultimatum to meet our demands (resolve and call off the strike). And in failure to meet and resolve the strike, we will troop out in our thousands and will massively fill the streets of Lokoja till our problem is solved.
Your Excellency, It’s our prayer that your administration should not witness such but your actions and inaction is a threat to our future.
We will remain calm and law abiding as we await your leadership role in saving our future.
Aluta Continua.
Long live NANS!
Long live Kogi State!!
Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!.
