KSU Medical School; Parents, Stakeholders Urge Govt To Send Students Abroad

Established in 2001 as Kogi State diagnostic hospital and renamed ‘Kogi State University Teaching Hospital (KSUTH), Anyigba in 2012. A perfect destination of medical diagnosis and treatment as at the time of its establishment, equipped with the state of arts facilities and machines. Considering its strategic location in state, and nearness to the university medical college, a good choice indeed for the state owned university.

Fast forward to 2016, it is now very apparent that this health institution is no match for a standard teaching hospital. The dilapidated structures, underequipped laboratories, absent infrastructure and staffs have become a bone of contention for this tertiary health institution. These have not only denied the medical school NUC/MDCN accreditation, but also made stagnant the career of over a hundred and fifty (150) medical doctors in the embryo, of which ninety-nine percent (99%) are Kogi indigenes.

The failure of past government to upgrade this teaching hospital to a standard level for over four (4) years now has caused a technical stagnation of the medical students in preclinical level. The emotional and psychological trauma the students go through is inexplicable. A one time promising school was literally abandoned. The politics being played here has resulted to little or no progression at all. A lot of talks, deliberations and writings have been going on for the past few years with no financial imbursement, the only catalyst of change needed here.

It is worthy of recall that instead of upgrading KSUTH, Anyigba, to a standard teaching hospital, the previous administration unguardedly and heedlessly wasted a lot of money starting another teaching hospital, which of course is at less than 5% completion, foundation level to be precise.

The New Direction administration of His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, cannot be blamed on this. It is commendable that the state Governor has prioritized the health sector and is committed to all round development of our health institutions and services. This he has shown through the many medical outreaches and press releases on the need to upgrade our state owned health facilities.

It is also worthy of note that Governor Yahaya Bello has set up a sixteen man committee to come out with the fastest possible option of salvaging the situation.

The state government actually has a lot options right now, but the tough question is “which is most preferable? “. The presence of two other tertiary hospitals, Kogi state specialist hospital and the Federal medical center, Lokoja, is a conjoint option. The unilateral exchange program with other institutions outside the country is another advisable option.

Some medical practitioners and elder statesmen have advised the state government to replicate what some states have done in Kogi as well. For some senior medical practitioners of Kogi origin, in order to get the desired medical expertise and powerful/ intelligent workforce, it is better the state government send her pioneer medical students who are due for clinical training abroad. Not only will this groom the students to become better doctors, it would also revitalize the state health sector when they eventually return to the state to serve for a couple of years.

An elder statesman while speaking with our correspondent noted that recently, over 60 students from Jigawa state were sent to a Chinese medical school to complete their training, costing the Jigawa state government about 100million naira only. Also, about 2 years ago, more than 200 medical students of Osun state university were sent to Ukraine to complete medical students. These set of students were transferred outside the country with a cost implication of less than two million naira per student.

Some parents have also agreed with the fact that this is about the cheapest and fastest option in saving the situation. For the students, it is mixed reactions with just one saying, “we just want to start clinical training”.

The state government as well as the 16 man committee has therefore been advised to as quick as possible, come out with an option to get the medical students out of this most dreaded condition, preferably sending her students abroad. Sending the students abroad is not a difficult option for a very proactive governor like Alhaji Yahaya Bello, says Mrs Attabo who so much believe in the uniqueness of the New Direction team.

It is worthy to note that the stagnated students of Kogi state university are even massively contributing their quota to the state health sector through their medical outreaches and programs that has affected thousands of Kogites. Some through their professional associations have even promised to work for the state and improve health services after graduation. The students right now need the support of the government to continue their studies and become medical doctors in the shortest possible time. In a state executive council visit to the institution sometime in October 2016, the medical students who so much believe in the New Direction agenda peacefully demonstrated; on their placards was a common inscription, “FAIR PLUS, FAIR ACCREDITATION”.

The Fact That People Criticize Me Doesn't Mean I Won't Perform My Duty As A Leader Or Do What Is Right - Philips Omepa

MEETING BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY GOVERNING COUNCIL, THE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE AND THE GOVERNOR HELD IN GOVERNMENT HOUSE TODAY MONDAY 10TH APRIL, 2017 AND THE DETAILED TRUTH OF THE MATTER.

It will be recalled that two weeks ago a meeting was held between the striking unions (ASUU, JAC), the governing council and the University management.

Due to discussions held between all parties, the governing council put down recommendations and presented it to the visitor of the institution alhaji yahaya Bello (the executive governor of kogi state). Part of the recommendations were:

- that all salary arrears be paid and the governor put out a question that he was confused between the great margin between the wage bill the University management is presenting and what the accountant general has with him. He was further clarified by the University bursar who explained every bit to him. And right there the governor called the auditor general to his office where he directed him and the University bursar to compute immediately and give him the exact wage bill of the University.

And right there he approved for the payment of three months salary.

- secondly Was The issue of screening results. The council made recommendations that the result should be released to them for further action. And that any staff of the University found wanting from the initial screening by the state government should be left for the council confirmation as you can't bring persons who are not academia, those who does not understand the system to screen professor, doctors etc. And that screening should be left with the council. The governor also approved it.

- thirdly which had to do with the welfare of the students Was The issue of the situation of classes, light, water, security, ICT etc. And the need for the governor to visit the school to see the situations for himself. All these in the words of the governing council chairman were approved immediately by the governor.
He also affirmed that they are targeted towards ending the strike immediately after Esther. And students should be advised to get ready for resumption.
Thanks

Omepa Philips To Lead A Protest On 31st Of March While COE Ankpa SUG President To Lead A Protest On 20th

The Students Union Government's (SUG) president of Kogi State University, Ayingba. Phillips Omepa have vowed to lead a statewide protest against the strike action affecting the institution.

His vow came in cognizance of an ultimatum he issued to both the state government and the striking lecturers to reach an agreement within the stipulated period.

He gave up until the 31st of march,2017 for an amicable resolution to end the strike or a consequential protest will follow, which will ground the economic activities in the state capital. In his words "If nothing happens after their screening ends on 31st march... I will lead a protest by April 1st in natacco... lokoja"

As it is now, two protest has been declared as a result of the ongoing statewide strike in tertiary institutions in the state after the SUG of Kogi State College of Education declared Monday 20th march as a protest day to press home their demand for an end to the ongoing strike.

In a bid to that, The SUG president of COE Ankpa is making plans and arrangements already for a peaceful protest slated on 20th March. He has taken all the legal steps to hold the protest and thereby calling other institutions in Kogi state that is affected to join the protest.

Philip Omepa Exchanged The Future Of KSU Students With A Plate Of Rice

Students’ activism or unionism is a solid fulcrum on which the future and the voice of the students spin. It engenders the smooth working of the activities of students in every living and functional institution, KSU inclusive. It is the mouthpiece of the students in time of words, and the students’ weapon in times of war. It is not the students’ goody-bag, and does not serve as the Ponzi scheme of the comrades.

The value of a president of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) to students in any university is akin to that of a VC to lecturers. Quote me anywhere, it is not a position usually occupied by a boy; a malleable tyro, callow boy. It is a position of honour, laced with many threats to life and even to the life of the occupier’s status as a student. It is not a position for debauchery, for waltzing and cha cha cha; it is not for the timid and a cheetah coward. It is a position of integrity; for the bold, the unbending, the unyielding, the victorious and the valiant men; it is, above all, for social sacrifice. The occupier of the position is a shepherd who lays down his own life for the lives of his sheep. It is not for the gourmand and the kleptomaniac; it is not for the insatiable; and, to cap it all, not for the gullible boys and their retinue of avaricious comrades.
There are, currently, various pieces of news regarding the mortgaging of the future of KSU students by Mr Omepa and his filching comrades who, under the pretence of fighting for the students, have been rolling over and down with the booty of the tepid and the infertile, corruptible government of Yahaya Bello. The government gave the KSU SUG comrades a hungry ₦1m to seal their lips and render any students’ impending protest following the strike embarked upon by the lecturers of the institution as well as other institutions as a result of non-payment of salaries and other entitlements impotent. Omepa collected the money and whittle the war against government. By collecting the bribe from the Governor or its agents, Mr Omepa has not only abused the sensibility and intelligence of the students, but has also sold their future and general life savings and investments for a plate of rice. He should be pilloried, or worst still, castrated.
Even though Omepa denied any collection of money from the government or its agents, and went ahead to dub Ogiri as throwing dirt at him, Mr Omepa, if by his conscience, he is not guilty as charged, he should, within three days, mobilize students for a showdown with the government. He should design placards and make every student to carry one each. He should call a press conference and openly reveal the activities of the government against educational institution in Kogi State. He should reveal one strike action too many under the milky government of Yahaya Bello. Mr Omepa has the chance to shine and have his good records written in gold for daring a despotic, callous government. He should make Lokoja impassable for the motorists so that, through it, the local and international communities will be drawn into the plights of the parents and students, and force the passers-by to sympathize with them. Through it, the students might have higher voices lent into their pains. They may eventually have the imbroglio between students/lecturers and the government settled headlong. Mr Omepa should lead the protest, and from the front too. These are the only ways we will be convinced of Mr Omepa’s innocence. SUG under him will have its indelible mark imprinted for posterity if Mr Omepa can prove to us that the allegation of collection of money from the government is false if he will embark on the protest any moment this week.

SAME GOVERNMENT THAT IS SAID TO HAVE BRIBED PHILLIPS OMEPA IS INVESTIGATING HIM WITH SSS - Cosmos

This Post was shared by Ksu SUG Public Relations Officer Ogiri Cosmos On Facebook and other social media pages.

Read the below

"Before I address the above topic let me quickly inform you that I just saw Isaac Ocheme president of KSCOEA calling on students to come out for protest. What I don't know is his legal framework and guarantee that the students will not be faced with a double jeopardy?

I leave you all to use your tongue and count your teeth. Don't forget where you come from.

I and my fellow excos from KSU are not weaklings. We have done it before and the whole world know and saw what we can do.
Don't you think we can even do more if we are ready?

We understand that until we are back to school no student will agree that we are working on something solid and out of victimization. We cannot come and protest and later start mentioning names in secret.

So I beseech every student to be calculative and watchful as a lot of people are trying to play games with your future!

Politics are been played here and for you to understand the wisdom behind Phillips assumed sluggishness you have to understand the political situation in Nigeria as whole where even at death of a Governorship Elect politics where played. Where even in the church, politics are played.

What happens if you are victimized for ever?
What happens if after the protest, ASUU refuse to go back to class - of course they won't until 100% of their issues are attended to.

What happens if things go worst after the protest and Bello holds on it to delay due process!

Hey! Don't be distracted, we waiting for the committees reports even when we know they will not provide us with 100% recommendations, let's wait for them to even present it.

If we fight now, Bello could dissolve this inaugurated committee and after much media pressure on him, he will constitute yet another committee with yet another 30 to 90 days to submit their report and recommendation.

Is that what you want?

According to Omepa Phillips, here is what he told me and I understand with him because that's the best thing to do at the moment. He said and I quote "...there will be no protest until after 31st. Because the government, university visiting panel and university council has promised that screening will be ending by 31st march and all issues will be treated before then".

The government has been pleading with him to keep the students calm and calmness I beseech everyone.

You and I know that the best time to fight in other to win comrades solidarity, people's sympathy and the Nation's security is when you have made proper consultation, and consolidation of rationales.

We will protest but not until after the ultimatum elapse.

I want to intimate you that any protest without Phillips Omepa is illegal. In this background I want to reassure you that he needs your support now than ever because the Government is really investigating every of his movements and actions from the SSS office.

Just yesterday he was interrogated over plans of using the students to stop the day to day activities of the patriotic people of Lokoja and the State government. If this people wants to get you, they know the perfect language to use.

Also, same yesterday he was tipped and interrogated over a meeting he did not attend with Sen. Dino.

Now you have to understand the President position over insisting on due process.

A meeting was actually held with Senator Dino but KSU SUG president was not there.

In fact he was impersonated by those trying to use students to fight the government for political reasons.

Here are the names of those present in the meeting with Sen. Dino melaye - Tom Ohikere, Austin Okai and our own very State APC chairman.

Now, read the names over again and you will understand the reasons why they are agitating seriously for a protest. These people are not fighting for your interest at all. They are aggrieved against Phillips Omepa because he debunked the earlier protest they planned.

They have succeeded in buying the following students over to parade and impersonate the Students Union Government.
The students that impersonated SUG in the meeting are: abdulrazak jimoh bello, abubakar isah, and ibrahim hadi adinoyi, Phillips Omepa was not there.

They know how strong KSU SUG is, and they know we can't not be bent to allow our students to join a badly planned, ill timed and a death trap strategy.

So, after all efforts to push Phillips Omepa into calling the students to the streets of Lokoja they form the 1million naira scandal against the union so students will turn against the unionist.

This is a plan perfectly drafted out not for the interest of the students but for selfish political interest.

Logical conclusion would have it this, how can the same government who has bribed Omepa Phillips be investigating him as a perceived enemy.

Let's wait and see what next after 31st of March.

Phillips Omepa needs you and I now more than ever, he said in his own words "Am been fought by students and am also been fought by government.
if the students are waiting for me to fight alone this time for the strike to be called off then am only but one man. But what am waiting for to fight is our unity and am not seeing that yet. They can arrest one man i.e me but if we fight together, they cannot arrest us all"

[ksu Asuu Strike Update]I Will Never Respect You Till I Die, KSU SUG President Tells PDP NYF Coordinator

The Kogi State University Student Union Government (SUG) president, Comrade Shaibu Philips Omepa has vowed never to show any form of respect to the Peoples Democratic Party National Youth Frontier (PDP NYF) Coordinator, Comrade Usman Okai Austin.

Omepa made this known while reacting to a story posted by Comrade Usman on his facebook time line, yesterday.

The story which borders on an alleged corruption practices between the state government and the students unions leaders in the state's higher institutions, was greeted with reactions from several flowers of the PDPNYF coordinator.

"The obvious romance of the student bodies, whose executives are now placed on monthly allowance of between 100,000 naira to 150,000 naira monthly, with the state government to truncate and frustrate efforts of the staffers of various institutions towards achieving their legitimate demands.” The PDPNYF cordinator alleged.

Registering his disappointment and anger towards the accusation, Omepa stated that all what Usman said were nothing but lies. He then posed a question that what if they (SUG) protests, how would the allegation be justified. Thereon, he promised not to respect the PDPNYF cordinator in his (Philips) life time.

Similarly, Omepa issued a disclaimaer on February 16th at about 8:46pm via his facebook account, debunking what he described as a 'rumour' making the round that he was bribed to avert a protest that was, according to him, never planned.

"I write to the generality of the students of Kogi state university and Congress of kogi state to debunk the rumor that the SUG has collected the sum of 1.2million Naira from KOGI STATE government to stop the protest which was never planned by the institution for 21st February 2017.

It is worthy of note that such rumor lingered in the last ASUU strike which was proven not to be true with the protest that held in ganaja junction on July 14th, 2016.

It is also worthy of note that the SUG president has been quiet as to issue regarding the current ASUU strike and this is because the body knew various procedures and method it adopted to achieve success in the past ASUU strike.

Part of the primary aim and mandate of the union is to protect the lives and security of its students. And this is why it cannot risk allowing its students participate in a protest it cannot guarantee their security.
This doesn't mean if protest becomes our last resort, it wouldn't be adopted.

For the avoidance of doubt I will emphatically stress out that if any government officials has given the SUG of KSU money to stop the rumored protest, he or she should come out with evidence for clarity and posterity sake.
Finally students are pleaded to keep their peace as decisions taken will purely put a lasting end to the issue of ASUU strike in KOGI STATE UNIVERSITY." He said.

ASUU Strike Grounds Activities In Kogi State University

The strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kogi State University has started taking its toll on the institution.

The non-Academic staff of the University had earlier joined other tertiary institutions in a strike action called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising all the Tertiary institutions in the State.

There was however mixed feelings among students concerning the strike, while some expressed gratitude to ASUU for allowing them to finish their examinations before embarking on the indefinite strike, others who are on their thesis or final year first degree project work lamented their plight as their supervisors have joined the industrial action.

The union had declared an indefinite strike last Friday demanding the immediate reconstitution of the university’s governing council and the payment of eight months arrears of salaries to all categories of academic staff.

Addressing reporters in Lokoja, the chairman of the union Dr. Daniel Aina explained that the absence of governing council for more than one year had affected the institution negatively that it could no longer function statutorily.

“In view of the demand for the immediate reconstitution of the university’s Governing Council, recent developments on our campus suggest that the lack of the council appear to be a ploy to erode the university autonomy which stands it out from all other institutions. ASUU-KSU will resist this.

“The ASUU chief lamented government’s allocation to the university for infrastructural development saying this is not up to the quarter of what came from the TETFund intervention which itself is a product of ASUU struggle.”

The state commissioner for education, Sunday Tolorunleke, accused the union of impatience saying the voucher for their salary has been prepared.

KOGI STATE UNIVERSITY TO GET TWO NEW CAMPUSES.

The Kogi State Government led by His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, recently approached the Kogi State Assembly with a Bill to decentralise the Kogi State University. The two arms of government are working in unison to make this laudable proposal a reality.

Put simply, two more campuses of the the state's flagship tertiary institution will be established once the Bill passes into law.

The reasons for this laudable proposal are many, but a few will suffice to make the point here.

Today Kogi State citizens do not have the benefit of studying any Engineering or Technology course in KSU. Each year, many otherwise qualified candidates from Kogi State have to forego their preferred courses or downgrade their study expectations. The Bill tends to reduce the incidence of this by providing for a School of Engineering and Technology in Kogi Central.

Today Agriculture has taken center stage and will continue to dominate the continental sphere as for many years to come. Kogi State has comparative advantages in Agriculture including vast arable lands and water for aquaculture and specialised agro-businesses like hydroponics. A school of Agriculture with all its economies which is billed to be sited in Kogi West, will broaden the field of manpower for agriculture in Kogi State.

There are no plans to move existing faculties out of the current campus except as may be required to put round pegs in round holes in view of the proposed new campuses. All the professional courses will most likely remain 'as is' at Anyigba Campus, namely Medical, Law, Arts, Education,Social,Humanities and Natural Sciences.

It goes without saying that anyone who is interested in the broad-based development of Kogi State and not blinded by myopic considerations should applaud this initiative.

The facts below show that our preoccupation should not be with 'why it cannot work' but rather, 'why should it not work'?

1. Kogi State University will still retain its HQs in Ayingba while her Vice Chancellor and Senate will work out from there Administrative wise.

2. Our teeming students needs not go to Ekpoma, Nasarawa or farther away to study courses that will be offered at the incoming campuses especially those affiliated to the Two Faculties which are today non existent.

3. The improved infrastructure and learning standards at all three campuses which I trust the New Direction Agenda of the Governor Yahaya Bello Administration to usher in is expected to attract thousands of fresh students to Kogi State from across the Country resulting in socioeconomic benefits.

4. Most of our elders who today elevate the Unity, Peace and Progress of Nigeria above tribal and ethnic sentiments first started in schools that broke down ethnic barriers. We believe the enlarged and enhanced 3-Campus structure will inculcate and localise such progressive experiences in future generations of Kogites who will meet and bond in KSU.

5. An admission policy which based on Equal Opportunities for all Kogites will be deployed in the new KSU under the coordination of a single Central Administration. Three campuses does not mean 3 Vice Chancellors, 3 Registrars or 3 Bursars within the Decentralization.

6. The name of this institution shall remain Abubakar Audu University - School of this or that at such and such location.

7. I implore the present generation of Kogites, and indeed Nigerians, to start looking at issues on the merits and away from the narrow prism of ethnicity which constricts development and limits innovation.

8. The issue of where funds will come from to run the new structure ought not to trouble anyone. A Scarcity Mentality has never been the characteristic of great people. Government is already looking beyond the recession. In fact the recession is in itself an opportunity to retool agelong norms which have not helped our society in order to eliminate waste and free up monies for new ways to succeed. Plus, we are also looking at collaborative models which have long been ignored. There is no limitations to success except those we place on ourselves.

Before we jump into the foray with all sorts of theories and conjectures let us sit back and think it through. We might indeed see things from a broader view made possible by an open mind to new directions rather than continuing in the narrow lanes carved out by pride and prejudice.

Just trying to make some sense out of a well thought out ,forward and future looking concept in not just naming a University after a National Statesman but to ensure his efforts and legacies are not left at one spot but expanded to more frontiers.
